The death of the admin went mostly unnoticed. It wasn't until the next day that his body was even found.
Quackity had entered the cell, like usual, but Sam had then heard the duck's panicked voice call for him.
The corpse hadn't been pretty, covered in bruises and cuts, laying in a pool of blood. The smell was indescribable. Quackity held his beanie pressed over his nose, trying to block out the smell. Sam's mask was supposed to filter the air, but he could still smell it. It almost made him gag.
Sam turned the body with his foot. The clothes were sticky, practically peeling off the blood-covered floor.
They could now see the wound. A jagged cut from just beneath Dream's collar bone to just below the ribs. Quackity looked away. He wasn't sure what he was feeling. He'd just killed someone. Obviously, he'd killed before, but never a final life. They'd always respawned.
Did he feel guilty? No, that couldn't be. Dream was a monster. He deserved death.
Maybe it was just the fact that Quackity had been the one to do it, that he had been the one to waste his time and energy, to dirty his hands with the blood of a disgrace.
No. It was not guilt, Quackity decided.
                              "So what now?" he asked.
Sam pinched the bridge of his nose, frowning. This was not how he'd wanted his Saturday morning to go.
"We bury the body and move on. No one can know" he eventually answered. His stomach turned in protest. He knew it was wrong. He knew the people deserved to know. But Sam was a coward.
Dream's death would be questioned, and Sam wouldn't have an answer.
"But what if someone sees us?" Quackity argued.
That was, of course, a possibility, a risk.
The area surrounding the prison wasn't very heavily traversed, but the tunnel to Snowchester was nearby, as was Bad's and Skeppy's mansion. And of course Tommy's watchtower. Yes, Sam had noticed the tower. He'd decided to let it be since it was giving Tommy something to do, but he did slightly regret that decision, as the tower had been a part of Tommy's ludicrous plan to attempt to kill Dream.
"Sam, we can't let anyone find out" Quackity urged Sam to rethink.
                              Quackity was right.
"We can't take unnecessary risks" Sam sighed.
His eyes traveled to the lava. It would make quick work of a body.
It would be wrong, so wrong, but at this point, did it even matter? Sam wasn't an idiot. He knew the part he'd played in Dream's suffering and eventual demise. He knew he was to blame just as much as Quackity, if not more. After all, he was the ultimate authority. He held the keys to the prison. And he'd allowed everything to happen.
Quackity followed his line of sight, quickly coming to the same conclusion. It was easy, clean, undetectable.
"Let'a make this quick then" Quackity sighed, grabbing the body's legs while Sam grabbed the arms.
They carried the body the few feet to the edge of the cell.
The body made contact with the lava, sizzling, burning, filling the air with the putrid stench of burnt flesh. And then it was gone. He was gone.
There was a silent pact between the two to never speak a word of this day.
The clear sunny day seemed almost mocking when they exited the prison. It reminded Sam of all the times Dream had begged him to take him to the courtyard, to see the sun, and Sam had denied him every time.
Now he almost wished he would've said yes.
Days passed. No one even suspected something had happened to the admin. No one had asked to visit him either.
Days turned to weeks, and Sam was at last faced with the problem of visitors. It wasn't any of Dream's friends (or more likely former friends). It was one of the newcomers, Tina. She'd asked to speak to Dream, which, of course, Sam had to decline. She, of course, questioned why, and Sam had told her something about Dream misbehaving recently and stricter security measures.
                              Tina had sighed.
"Can you let me know when I can see him?"
                              Sam had nodded.
It was around this time Sam started to notice the server had significantly less animals then previously. Sam didn't really have a cow farm because he could usually find wild cows when he needed them, but his food supply was running short and he hadn't seen a wild animal in days.
He refused to consider it anything but the animals deciding to move further away.
Two weeks later, almost three months after the admin's death, changes became apparent to everyone. Every flower had died, and the trees were well on their way.
Hannah was affected the most, her roses barely still alive. She was constantly exhausted, eating more, sleeping more, all to feed the roses, but even they were slowly but steadily wilting away.
Four months in, the fish mysteriously died, floating to the surface over night, an eerie sight for Tubbo as he one morning stepped out of his cabin in Snowchester.
Tubbo informed the rest of the server members of his findings.
Later that day Sam was confronted by Callahan.
                              Steady hands grabbed Sam's collar.
"What happened to him, Sam?"
"I don't, what? What are you talking about?" Sam denied everything.
"Don't fucking pull that shit with me, Sam. The server is dying, now what did you do to him?"
Sam had never seen Callahan this angry.
He should keep denying everything. He really should, but he was so tired.
He was tired of pretending, tired of lying, tired of covering for Quackity, tired of bearing the death of his friend on his conscious, just...tired.
                              So he gave in.
                              "He's dead, Callahan"
Sam couldn't even bring himself to feel angry as a sword was forced through his chest. Couldn't bring himself to care as his first canon death message showed up. Couldn't bring himself to care as he respawned at his home.
Back in the smp the members had gathered outside the prison, watching in shock as Callahan tore it down, block by block, until he reached the main cell.
They'd always known he wasn't human, but just how powerful was he?
He eventually reached the empty cell. Nothing indicated the cell has been used except for the copious amount of blood splattered across the obsidian.
Callahan opened the chest in the corner, and picked up a familiar mask.
The server members all realized what had happened. They all realized it was too late.
                              They were doomed.
