"Thank you for tonight, it was really appreciated," Blake tells my parents, hugging my mom and shaking my dad's hand, once we're back home.
He does some kind of special handshake with Adam before making a few steps in my direction, wrapping his arms around my neck, pulling me closer.
I gasp in shock, not expecting him to show this much affection, especially not in front of my parents and even less in front of my brother. He surprises me even more, when he kisses the top of my head before pulling away and crossing the lawn to get to his house.
I've never wanted to run to his house as badly as I want to right now.
After all these years of being neighbors, of watching his light go off nights after nights through my window, never have I wanted to cross that lawn and knock on his door that much.
"Keys," I tell mom, once we're inside, holding my hand in front of her.
She hands them to me, "Be careful. Call me when you get there and when you leave."
"Yes, mom. I'll be very careful."
"Where are you going?" Adam interrogates from the doorway, getting his shoes off.
"A party. A girl from my class is throwing it, and my friends and I are going."
"You're letting her go to a party?" he asks as if I was still a child.
"I'm eighteen, Adam, it's time for me to enjoy my youth, don't you think so?"
"No," he replies sternly.
"Anyways. I have to go, I'm picking up Zora."
"If you drink, don't drive. Call us, we'll go get the car tomorrow," dad reminds me.
"I don't drink, but I'll try to remember. Love you, bye."
I head back outside before Adam can convince my parents that letting me go to a party isn't a good idea. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? I could see people doing some not-friendly-stuff. I could see drunk and high people. I could meet non-frequentable people.
I'm not a kid. I think I can handle myself.
I ignite the engine and I'm about to leave, when Adam comes rushing out the house, pulling the passenger's door open and sitting down.
"What are you doing?"
"We're coming."
"We?" I ask him when the backseat door opens and Blake storms in, sitting in the middle seat.
"Whose party are we crashing?" he demands.
"We are not crashing any party. You two are going to get out of the car and go to sleep. Didn't you tell me you felt jetlagged earlier, Blake? Maybe you should go get some sleep. Adam, you should go with him."
"Nah, I'm feeling full of energy. How 'bout you, Ad?"
"I'm feeling great."
"I take back every word I said earlier, I didn't miss either of you. Huh!" I yell, before pulling out of the driveway, heading towards Zora's house.
***
As soon as we get to the party, Zora and I literally run away from Adam and Blake, though she seemed to like their company back in the car. Especially Blake's, which for some reason makes me annoyed, jealous?
She guides me to the kitchen where the drinks are. She hands me some unknown liquor in a red cup, but I remind her that I'm the DD, like always. Because I don't drink alcohol. Ever. I hate it. The smell only threatens to make me throw up.
