Jisung sighed and, although he was expecting Hyunjin to say something along those lines, he was dumbstruck. He had the feeling Hyunjin had never let his feelings go and did everything he could to avoid the topic when he felt that it was coming. However, this time, it seemed that Hyunjin was overwhelmed with emotions as a result of the events from the night before.
"Hyunjin," Jisung took a deep breath, conflicted on how to respond. He didn't want to give Hyunjin any false hope, but he didn't want to hurt him with any harsh words at the same time. "You're my friend."
Jisung bit his lip, not wanting to go on when he saw fat tears roll down Hyunjin's cheeks as he sobbed.
"I know how you feel, ok? But I only see you as my friend - nothing more." Jisung tried to explain. "Please understand me, Hyunjin. I'll still be here for you when you need me."
"It's ok." Hyunjin nodded, sniffling. "I must be crazy." He laughed, exasperated.
Jisung stayed quiet and, instead, used a tissue to dry Hyunjin's tears, smiling comfortingly.
Jisung spent the rest of his time there doing his best to cheer Hyunjin up, until he noticed the time and realised he still had to clock into work. Ensuring that Hyunjin would be ok one last time, Jisung left for work, stopping by his home to grab a change of clothes.
He knew exactly what was waiting for him in the office and, yet, walked in almost fearlessly.
"Jisung!" The first perturbed cry Jisung had the displeasure of hearing belonged to Seungmin, who came running as soon as he saw Jisung. "What on earth did you and the newbie do last night?"
"Hello to you too, Seungmin." Jisung said, sarcastically. "It's a long story."
"I figured." Seungmin rolled his eyes and Jisung chuckled shaking his head.
"Where's Jeongin?" Jisung asked, walking into the office and looking around.
"He's in Chief's office-"
"WHAT?" Jisung's eyes widened and he could already feel the panic. "W-why?"
"If you'd let me finish I'd tell you, Jisung." Seungmin sighed. "Last night he got a call about whatever happened with you and the minute Jeongin walked in Chief snatched him away for interrogation."
"Oh no, this is bad." Jisung muttered running a hand through his hair. He had already pushed his limits with the Chief; if Jeongin told the Chief what Jisung was really up to, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to keep his job any longer. Besides he didn't think the Chief would snatch Jeongin into his office this soon, before Jisung even got into work.
"Bad? Jisung, what happened?" Seungmin asked, concern for his partner and best friend clearly evident. "Is it...crane?" He whispered, looking around to make sure no one heard.
"I... I questioned Jang Heejin." Jisung admitted, sighing.
"What?" Seungmin covered his mouth with his hand, shocked. "Why would you do that?"
"Seungmin, come on, don't you think what happened on his birthday was a little weird?" Jisung questioned as he walked around to his desk, Seungmin following close behind.
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean you can just waltz up and interrogate the man!" Seungmin sounded utterly exasperated as he rubbed his forehead.
"I know, but understand where I'm coming from." Jisung pleaded, looking up at Seungmin.
"Fine, but how are you going to explain this to-"
"Han Jisung!"
Seungmin was cut off by the booming voice of the chief that caused almost everyone there to flinch as it resonated throughout the room. Jisung fearfully looked up to see the Chief standing at the entrance to the office, Jeongin peering out from behind him, an apologetic look in his eyes. Jisung desperately wanted to ask him what he had revealed about the night before, but stopped himself, avoiding eye contact with the Chief.
