Saoirse didn't get up for a long while. There was as knot in her neck and her back cracked as she moved but she wasn't ready to get up. She wasn't ready to live yet. She wanted to wake up and see that the picture she broke days before was still framed beautifully. She wanted to see Trevor walking through the front door with a single rose and a basket of Twix, apologizing repeatedly. She wanted him to be here with her and not a cheater, not missing and not no longer part of her life.
How do you help someone when you don't have all the information?
"Can I come in?" Saoirse stated when he picked up the phone.
"I'm sorry who is this?" Coleman asked looking at the caller i.d. again squinting at the numbers.
"Saoirse Greer." She paused, "this is about Trevor's case" Coleman put her on speaker and motioned for Brent to come over.
"Yeah, hi sir-sah" he sounded it out trying to get her name right. "You remember something?"
"Can I come in?" she asked urgently.
"Yes, of course" Irons interjected to Coleman's announce.
"Thank you, is now good?"
"Yesterday was good sweetheart, but today works too I suppose." Coleman smirked as Irons hit him over the head. Ouch Coleman mouthed as he rubbed his head.
"Great, I'm leaving now." She ignored his comments and put her jacket on quickly. She was going to get information out of them, she was done being a suspect, she was done being in the dark.
THEN
Dark. The barn went dark as they closed the doors, the moonlight not penetrating the trees leaving Trevor and his companions quivering in the cold, damp, dark room. Trevor heard whimpers from a nearby cage and turned slightly his shirt getting caught in a broken wire, scraping his back, blood tricked from the wound immediately.
"What is this place?" he asked to everyone and no one. There was a moment of silence as the other prisoners debated speaking, debated risking being heard.
"We don't know" a soft voice said, Trevor strained his ears to hear. "I'm Izzy, and that was my brother." She pointed to the table even though no one could see her, they all knew who she was referring too. Her voice was broken and she let out a soft cry as she hugged herself to keep warm.
"I'm sorry" Trevor stated dumbly, of course he would be sorry, she watched her brother get butchered.
That was the first body he saw when the sun broke through the small windows that hung high in the barn, bringing light through in what felt like years. Izzy's brother was the first but wouldn't be last body Trevor saw mutilated during his stay with the Durr's. He didn't sleep that night, he sat and starred at the shadows that ran along the ceiling, letting soft moans of pain and fear escape his mouth.
Trevor counted four people when the light broke through the barn, Izzy, Danny, Hannah, and Wendy. Each person caged separately, each cage soaked with blood and urine of those that came before.
Trevor was still at the begging stage of his journey here. He banged on the cages, screamed at the top of his soar lungs. He pulled at the wire of the cage in hopes to use it as a weapon but it didn't budge only sliced his hand further with its rusted edged.
"Stop it" Danny said calmly, Trevor didn't stop. "Stop it" Danny demanded.
"I can't just sit here" Trevor reasoned.
"And you think we like just sitting here waiting to die?" Hannah barked. All of them were irritable and angry, a vengeful rage filling in them slowly growing with each passing minute.
"Don't blame him" Izzy stated pulling her eyes away from her brothers body. They still hadn't come to clean him up, if they ever would. "He is just doing as we did" she said softly adjusting her back to her brother's lifeless body.
"Yeah, but it's annoying." Danny said through gritted teeth. "I'm next and his cries are not helping me."
"You don't know that" Hannah reasoned reaching a hand through her cage towards him, he ignored her compassionate efforts.
"You don't not know that!" Danny replied in a snarky tone as he stretched his legs out in the cage. His back was against one wall while his feet hit the cage with ease. "You are in denial" Danny said slowly and clearly looking directly at Trevor waiting to catch his eye. Once Trevor's scared eyes met Danny's, Danny repeated himself. "You are in denial if you think you are getting out of here." Trevor shook his head, he couldn't die in here, he just couldn't believe that. "You will try and think that you will be safe, that you will be free but we've been here the longest" he gestured to him and Hannah "and I haven't been found."
"Danny," Izzy started
"I have been gone for I don't even know how long. They usually take a new one every 1-2 weeks, they have been taking new ones what feels like almost every day." Trevor's eyes drifted to Izzy's brother.
"Stocking up for winter, isn't that what the tall one said?" Hannah questioned as she pulled her hand back to her chest.
"What happened to him?" Trevor asked unable to silence his burning thoughts.
Danny looked to Izzy how shook her head and cowered into herself, Danny explained what happened, he knew Izzy wouldn't say it aloud, and he didn't want her to have to explain to the Durr's latest catch what happened to her brother. "He got a bolt loose" Danny said turning back to face his feet. "He tried to get out, he only ended but pissing them off even more."
"So don't try anything stupid" Hannah said bitterly. Hannah and Daniel had been on three dates, they didn't know each other enough to love one another but if they survived she knew she wanted to be with him for the rest of her life, or at least she knew she never wanted to be alone again.
