both hyraxes stayed the nearly the same for the first million years since the world has been seeded with them, with no predators and no competition other than themselves. but among the more basal rock hyraxes, a faster, more gracile form was born.
in order to make it to food sources first, this hyrax evolved longer legs and more stamina than most other hyraxes. the first major divergence in its lineage. these rock hyraxes will give rise to nearly all the known herbivorous hyraxes in the world. A very basal example of this Group is the cervyrax, apart of the clade Hyracocervia. but unlike the very similar looking basal rock hyrax decendants, this creature has 3 toes instead of 4 on its front feet.
In the trees, a lineage of tree hyraxes learns to take protein from insects crawling on trees, and this newfound craving for protein will only grow as time goes on. these tree hyraxes will give rise to all carnivorous, insectivorous, and omnivorous hyraxes in the world.
