Your pov:
I walked out of my little hut and into the corridors of the maze, the morning sun shining down on me. I've been here for about 8 years. My parents dropped me off when I was 6 and I'm 14 now. It's been a rough couple of years, especially with no one to talk to.
It's not like I'm completely alone, I have my friends. I call them greviers but I've given all eight of them different names. Wendy, Clyde, Kenny, Kyle, Twiggy, Rose, Stuart and Bobby. They've been by my side ever since I was 7.
I grabbed my backpack and slung it over my shoulder. The corridor was cold and covered in slime and ivy, but I kind of liked it. I grabbed a thicket of vines and began climbing. When I was halfway up, I heard the familiar clicking of Twiggy, the smallest of the greviers and my favourite. "Where are you going?" He whirred. I had learned what each of their noises meant and began communicating with them not too long ago.
"I'll be back soon. I promise, Twiggy." I said to him. He got up on his hind legs and leaned against the wall with his metal tail wagging, like a dog would. I looked up and climbed higher until I reached the top. I could see everything from up here. I saw a blazing desert beyond the stone walls and in the centre of the maze was a large area of grass.
I leapt from my perch to another wall, slowly making my way to the grass square. When I got to the last wall that overlooked the greenery, I sat down with my legs hanging over the ledge. I took off my bag and grabbed out my violin. I've had it with me ever since I could remember and always played it around the greviers. I tuned the strings and began playing a few notes until it formed one of the songs my mother played for me.
~hanging tree from the hunger games ~
I sang the song as I remembered the memories of me and my mother around a campfire in a forest. Tears welled up in my eyes as I saw her cold, dead, brown eyes in my mind. When the song was over, I watched the trees sway in the wind for a while.
An hour or so later of me just eating fruit and watching the trees, I got up and prepared myself to leave. I was about to jump to another wall when I heard it. A loud alarm rang through the maze and I stopped in my tracks. I ran back to where I was sitting moments ago and watched as metal doos in the centre of the grassy square opened up and something crawled out.
It was a boy. He had dark skin, jeans and a dirty white shirt. He cautiously crept into the open and began freaking out. "IS ANYONE OUT THERE?!" He yelled. I stayed quiet and hidden. Who is this boy? "WHERE AM I? IS ANYONE OUT THERE?"
He eventually calmed down and grabbed boxes from the hole in the ground. He looked through them and threw different supplies around. I sat back and watched for a while until I hear Twiggy clicking and whirring below me. "Come back, please."
"Alright, alright. I'm coming." I quietly replied. I carefully climbed down and pet Twiggy on the head. His body was covered in slime and tiny hairs but I loved him anyway. He lowered down and nudged my shin. "I'll give you a ride back."
I grabbed a towel from my backpack and draped it on Twiggy's back. I climbed on and we strolled through the maze. "Did you see anything up there?"
"Yeah. There was some sort of grass field in the middle of the maze. Then the strangest thing happened. A boy showed up from this...box thing in the ground...I don't know where he came from."
"Interesting..."
"I know. Anyway, we're here!" I leapt from my grevier and took the towel off him to wash it. "Do you want something to eat?" I asked.
Twiggy immediately began wagging his tail and I pet his head again. I walked into my hut and grabbed a piece of meat from the bucket beside the door. Twiggy started jumping around like a dog and wagged his metal tail above his head.
"Sit." He sat down and I threw him the meat. He was overjoyed and caught it with his needle-like teeth.
"CAN ANYONE HEAR ME!!" Came the voice from the boy in the field. I felt sorry for him, he was all alone like I was. Maybe I should go and introduce myself. I thought to myself. No. I have no idea who he is, how can I trust him?
I decided against meeting him and would go on with my normal life. Little did I know he was the first of many others to come.
