"Get along with the voices inside of my head. You're tryin' to save me, stop holdin' your breath."

~

Hermione

ONE week. It's only been one week since my encounter with Ricky, Gianna, Jack, and Leo. However the only person that haunted my thoughts is Leo. All week at work, in my dreams, even during my time studying.

Even now, I stand at the nurses station in the ICU writing up a chart, and Leo's abs are circling my thoughts.

The ringing of my phone pulls me out of my thoughts, and I never been so thankful of my mother calling me while at work.

I quickly answer placing the phone between my ear and shoulder, "Hi mom."

"Hey honey! I haven't heard from you, so I'm calling to just check on you." My mom greets which causes me to smile.

Her cheerful has always been contagious.

"I've just been busy with work." I reply with a smooth lie.

"Mhm, too busy to call your mom? I understand you are becoming a surgical hero, but it's taking my time away with my daughter." I can hear her pout and I chuckle shaking my head.

"I'm off tomorrow, so how about we go out somewhere, that one Italian restaurant you've been dying to eat at?" I ask as I finish up a patients post-op charts.

"This is why I love you. My favorite daughter in the whole world." My mom gushes as I roll my eyes.

"I'm your only daughter, only child at that." I smirk as I hold the phone with my hand.

"True, the day your father and I brought you home, will always be the best day of my life." She says and a small smile appears on my lips.

"I love you mom." I reply softly

"I love you too Hermione." She says and I know she's sitting in dads armchair.

She does that oftentimes when she misses him.

"He'd be so proud of you. We both are." She says softly.

"Thank you." I let out a shaky breath not wanting to cry, "Um my pager is going off. I'll text you details for tomorrow later." I say with a rush before hanging up.

Closing my eyes I take deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly.

Don't cry.

"Dr. Carter, a word." Dr. Webb calls out from his office.

Handing the patients chart to the medical receptionist quickly, I make my way towards his office.

"Please close the door on your way in." He announces and I comply, before sitting before him.

"We have to talk." The salt and pepper haired man says as he takes off his reading glasses.

As he runs his eyes balls he lets out a sigh, before looking at me, "You need to understand that taking longer shifts isn't helping anyone out here. Not me, you, or your fellow coworkers. All it does is overwork yourself as if you are a nurse and not getting any surgery time."

He clasps his hands together and place them on his desk, "I fully understand drive, the ambition, and the hunger to prove yourself. To be the best surgeon New York has ever seen. Hell even the world. But I do know what that ambition and hunger can cause people; a great downfall. I don't want you to fall before you even go to your peak."

"So with that being said, I'm going to put you to the test. I have a gallbladder removal scheduled tomorrow morning at 10am. You will be assisting me with this surgery and I want to see if all this time in the hospital has helped you prepare for times like these." He proclaims as my mouth nearly dries.
