ESTE WAS ALONE AGAIN. That was her biggest regret over what she had done. Of course she knew it had been the right thing to do, even if it didn't feel that way now. Without her, the coven would have failed to take down the Cullens. They would try again after time and more coordination but that wasn't Este's business anymore. She didn't want a part in the destruction of an innocent family.

It had been three days since the fight in the forest. Estella hadn't left Colorado. Somehow she couldn't bring herself to leave. It was ridiculous, everything was holding her back. Not only her love for the state, the beauty of Aspen in the trees and the mountains. It was also because of him, somehow she felt she wasn't done. Este still wanted him to know the pain she had experienced, she couldn't bring herself to find him again but she also couldn't leave.

She didn't go find the coven after it had all gone down. Este had half expected that Nova would come and find her, to kill her for betraying the group or destroy her simply out of the anger she felt. Este knew that any bind she had with her three companions was now long gone.

The coven would never accept her again, not when they couldn't trust her anymore. Este had gone against them, sided with the innocence of the Cullens over the loyalty of her friends. Nova, Quinn and Laurent had been in her life for decades. For a while they had been the only people she had known. That's what made it so hard knowing she would never have them again, even if it was the right thing to do.

Este was also wondering whether the Volturi would be against her now, she doubted they would care enough to destroy her for discarding a task they never really set. Part of her hoped that they would turn up. She didn't see the point of continuing anymore. She'd only been surviving these last few decades because of the coven.

It's not that Este wanted to die, it was the opposite really. Este still wanted to live, she wanted to fall in love and make friends who weren't killers. She wanted a wedding, she wanted a family who loved her. Parents, siblings and cousins with dozens of inside jokes. She wanted pets and children and a house with a garden. She wanted to explore the world and actually feel the sun on her skin. She wanted a beating heart, she wanted to taste food and see dreams like watercolour paintings behind her eyes. Este wanted everything she couldn't have.

She just wanted to be human.

Este was sick of living this half-life, sick of seeing herself as a monster over things she couldn't control. She barely recognised herself, covering mirrors wherever she went. Her unnatural beauty was clouded by her pale skin and red eyes. Those deep scarlet eyes. They would haunt her nightmares if she could sleep. In her mind she saw them, unfamiliar eyes blinking back at her.
