EDWARD CAN'T HAVE been that much taller than Carlisle yet he towered over her in this moment. Este stopped, trying to accentuate her height slightly. She met his glare with her own and tried to keep her thoughts to a minimum. This however was impossible, she could not shut off her thoughts not after what had just happened in her mind.

"I'd like to talk to you, if you don't mind" Edward stated calmly.

His eyes were dark black making his skin look even more pale. He had a very structured face, his cheekbones jutted out from his skin, his jaw at a sharp angle. His eyes were narrowed with anger, the white almost vanishing from the shadows. His hair wasn't as shaded as his eyes, it had an most red tinge to it in the lights that Alice had set up.

"I need to speak to Carlisle" Este looked over his shoulder, hoping to spot him somewhere in the living room.

"I need to talk to you before you find Carlisle, it's important" Edward continued, this was enough to interest Este. She looked back with a frown. She could imagine he was going to try and warn her off this family. It was evident that he didn't trust her.

"You're right, I don't trust you" Edward faked a smile.

"I'd appreciate it if you left my mind alone" Este took a step back as though this was going to help, "get it over with. What do you want to say?"

"Follow me" Edward glided past her and out into the night. Was this a set up? Was he going to try and murder her in the woods? Surely a creative way to deal with things.

"I'm not plotting to kill you" Edward spoke again, "that would be too much effort"

"Wow" Este whispered sarcastically. She looked over her shoulder almost desperate to catch a glimpse of Carlisle but he was nowhere to be seen. Edward assumed that Este would follow, he'd taken his eyes off her. He was right, Este wanted to know why he'd built up this hatred before he really knew her.

She turned away from the party and followed him out into the night. She could tell that it was cold. They were approaching midnight after all. Soon they'd be in a new year however Este had seen so many of these that she didn't really care anymore.

"I think we've gotten off on the wrong foot" Este looked at him carefully as they started walking into the trees, "and I apologise for that, it's my fault. I'm sorry for the way that we met, I'm sure attacking your family didn't create the best impression"

"No it didn't" Edward agreed blankly.

"Well then I'm sorry, I realise it wasn't the right way to go about things but I'd been suffering for a long time and I assumed it was the only way to free myself of that. Revenge always seems like a good idea at the time, anyway I'm sorry... it was wrong"
