ESTE STRODE OUT OF THE PATH in the woods, her eyes staring directly at the Cullen house. It had only been three days since she'd been inside that house playing piano and telling Carlisle how much she loved him and now she stared at it through the eyes of a stranger. It was as though she had never been apart of the family.

It was night now, the stars were covered by a thick haze of clouds and the wind was battering trees against each other. The lights inside the Cullens house burnt a soft gold. They were all at home, Este had heard them arguing. She couldn't make out what they were saying but she didn't want to. Este knew they were arguing about her. She tried not to be surprised that their anger was still fuelling their woods.

As she walked into the clearing in front of the house, the talking had stopped. They'd all heard her. Este wasn't sure how long she was supposed to stay away. Of course she wasn't coming back even if Carlisle believed that she was. Lying had felt essential at the time even if now it left a sour taste in her mouth.

Este stood in the warm glow of the outdoor lights patiently. The living room was empty, she knew they were coming. In the next second, the front door flew open and Edward came storming out.

"What are you doing here?" He yelled at her, "were we not clear enough for you?"

"I'm just here to talk" Este raised her hands in mock surrender as Edward glared at her.

They were all behind him. Carlisle the furthest forward, trying to reach Edward through his mind. He stared at Estella in concern, knowing that something had happened. He was not aware of her decision to leave, he was not aware that she had been to Italy. In his mind everything was the same as it had been that night after the commotion. Some part of her wished that he knew the truth. Some part of her longed to see anger in his eyes. It would make her feel less cruel.

Behind him stood Rosalie and Emmett. Emmett had his hand in Rose's shoulder as though holding her back. She looked as furious as Edward and Estella tried not to remember the conversation they'd had in the woods where she'd asked Este to not hurt her father, in fact she'd pleaded. What must she think of Este now? The memories of her bond with Rose faded to ash in her mind.

Alice and Jasper stood back in the doorway silhouetted by light. Jasper had his arm around Alice's waist as she lay against his chest. Her eyes looked just as upset had they had been the last time she'd seen her. Este couldn't help but wonder whether she'd broken her. Alice had always seemed so fragile but she'd also seemed so happy. Now the happiness was gone, Alice just looked empty.
