ESTE AND CARLISLE WALKED OUT INTO the dark. The hospital car park was weirdly full. There must be a lot of accidents on New Years Eve. Este thought there must be a lot of drunken blunders. She often wished she could get drunk, she'd never had the opportunity in her youth due to her status and gender.
"Did no one see you running into the hospital?" Este asked to break the silence.
"I ran at an average pace when I got to the car park" Carlisle explained, "driving would've taken too long, I was worried about you"
"You didn't think I was actually hurt did you?" Este laughed, "you're supposed to be smart"
"I was worried about you freaking out, not being hit by a truck" Carlisle continued, "I didn't know what that meant, what they'd think. I was worried that if I didn't get there in time they'd force you to see a different doctor"
"Yeah I was worried too" Este sighed, "but you got here"
They reached the end of the car park and Este realised she didn't know which way she was going. She had been planning on walking forever to escape Colorado. It's not as though she would get tired and she had all the time in the world. Carlisle looked at her curiously as she looked left and right down the dark, tree lined roads.
"Where do you want to go Stella?" He asked gently.
That was the question. Where she wanted to go. She wanted to go with him, back to his home with his perfect family and his warm smile. She wanted things to be easy but they weren't, so she needed to leave. She wanted to save the Cullens and that meant going to Washington.
"Away" she whispered in response, "away from Colorado"
"Then you want to go right" Carlisle pointed up the road, "I'm sill walking with you"
"Right, suit yourself" Este shrugged as she turned and walked right. He did follow, his calm footsteps leaving barely a trace. Este felt she was louder, her bag clutched to her back and her clothes still scruffy from her fall. She probably looked a complete mess.
"Alice vanished from the party" Carlisle started talking again, "when she came back she locked herself in her room. She came to see you, didn't she?"
"No" Este shook her head, "why would she do that?"
Silence fell again. Este was staring at the sky, not looking where she was walking, maybe that's why she was so perceptible to oncoming vehicles. At least this time she had Carlisle to push her out of the way. The stars were barely visible that night because of the clouds, fireworks were still exploding in the distance but Este couldn't see any of them anymore.
