"Liv get up." I heard a voice from across the room. It took me a minute to recognize it was Peter. "We have to see Alex off."

The mention of Alex's name got me fully alert and I got out of bed quickly. I went to the bathroom to wash my face and put on sweatpants, it was too early to get dressed for practice anyway.

"Ready to go?" Peter asked me. I nodded. Today, like tomorrow night after he returned in the room we had kept the conversation to a minimum.

We walked towards his and Alex's room and knocked on the door but got no answer.

"They can't still be asleep, can they? He'll miss his flight!" Peter said. "Should we, umm get in?"

"Uhm... you go." I said. The thought of walking in on Alex with Rafaella was too much for so early in the morning.

Peter knocked on the door once again and slowly started to open it. He peeked inside and then kicked it all the way back.

"What—?" I started saying before I looked inside. The room was empty and all of Alex's things were gone. "He could be at breakfast."

"He's gone." Peter said as he walked towards the desk and picked up a white piece of paper. He read it and let out a deep breath, handing it to me.

See you back at home guys.

-       Alex

"Why did he leave without saying goodbye?" I wondered out loud.

"To make the whole thing easier on everyone." Peter said and I realized he was right. Damn you Alex!

"What are going to do?" I asked.

"There's nothing to do." Peter said apathetically as he walked towards the door. "See you at breakfast."

I sat on Alex's bed wondering whether or not I should call Rafaella. They had probably left together, she would have insisted on escorting him to the airport so he wouldn't be alone.

I heard footsteps and looked up. Mr. Jones appeared on the doorcase.

When he saw me he looked surprised. "Olivia? What are you doing here?" He asked me. Looking at the empty side of Alex's room he continued: "Where's Alex?"

"He's gone." I said and got up to hand him the note I was holding in my hand.

"But... Mr. Alavas came to drive him to the airport. I was going to escort him, he's my responsibility."

"I think he didn't want to inconvenience you and Mr. Alavas."

Mr. Jones rubbed his chin, thinking. "I don't know how it got to this." He said, sitting opposite of me, on Peter's bed.

"Mr. Jones, this won't have any impact on Alex's record at the university, will it?" I asked.

"No, no. Absolutely not. This is our thing, we've all worked so hard and dedicated so much time. I haven't even told them they made Alex go."

I sighed a sigh of relief.

"He will be credited for his work." Mr. Jones continued, "The same way as the rest of you."

I smiled.

The news that Alex had left quietly in the middle of the night didn't sit well with anyone. I called Rafaella, who I assumed was the one that took him to the airport but she didn't answer my call, so we were all in the dark. Except from a text that Peter got a few hours later from Alex informing him that he had made it back.
