"Thanks for arranging this." David said as he followed his teammate and friend Thiago Silva in the room.

"No problem." Thiago said sitting down on one of the chairs. They were in the dining room of David's house in Rio. "He'll be here at any second." He said.

David nodded and sat across his friend.

"Have you thought about what you want?" Thiago asked me.

"I've got no idea. I was hoping he'd help me choose."

"Definitely. I was clueless too."

"And?"

"She loved it. Or so she said." Thiago said.

The bell rang and David got up to answer the door. A few seconds later he reappeared in the dining room followed by a short guy with gray hair. He looked around 60 and was holding a large box with a big lock.

"Mr. Silva. Good to see you again." He greeted Thiago.

"You too Mr. Pinilla. Thank you for doing this." Thiago said as he got up to shake the older man's hand.

"I've brought a huge variety with me, because I wasn't sure what you had in mind." Pinilla said.

"Egh... I don't have anything in mind really."

"That's okay. That's why I'm here." He said, setting the box on the table. David and Thiago moved across from him so that he could privately put the combination on the lock. "Ah, here we go." Pinilla said when he opened the box.

The light hit the contents of the box and they glowed almost unnaturally. David glanced inside at the gold, rose gold and silver rings. Some with diamonds, round, oval, square, big and small, some with flamboyant stones like ruby, sapphire and amethyst. There was even a ring with a large black onyx stone. David felt dizzy.

There were so many choices to pick from and David felt that it was very important to pick a ring she'd like. Somehow David thought it would speak volumes if Sarah ended up hating what he picked.

"There are many choices. Is the lady in question traditional?" Pinilla asked, his hand moving towards the white gold rings with the diamonds.

"Aghhh..." David muttered. At that moment he was really glad his friend had arranged for the jeweler to come to his house.

When David had told Thiago a few days ago that he was thinking of proposing to Sarah, his friend had warned him against window shopping for a ring. "The paparazzi will find you out. It will spoil the surprise." He had told David. But David now was glad for another reason. He was so clueless about what kind of ring he wanted, that the press would make fun of him for sure.

"Probably not?" David said questioningly.

"Most girls go for the diamonds." Pinilla said and then he launched in a monologue about rocks, clarity and quality of the stone and showcased some of the rings he brought with him.

"What'd you get Isabele?" David asked.

"Diamond." Thiago told him.

"Ah, yes. It was exquisite." Pinilla jumped in. "Four carat, marquise cut, F on the color scale and with practically no inclusions."

David looked at Thiago wide eyed. But Thiago looked bewildered as well. "I've got no idea what he just said."

"So what do you think?" Pinilla asked again.

David bent down to look at the rings. He decided to just look at them and see if he liked something. And not worry about color scales and inclusions. "What about this one?" He said pointing at one of the rings.

"Excellent choice. Round diamond, 3 carats." Pinilla informed him.

David tried to visualize the moment Sarah would see the ring. If she'd like it, how it would look on her finger. He knew her, he realized. He should trust his judgement.

"I'll take it."
