Chapter 16

After finishing the rest of the exercises it was time for the 5x5. I sat on the bench and watched along with everyone else. Scolari and the coaches would stop the game regularly to enter the field and give instructions.

"Hey." Alex said sitting next to me.

"Hi!" I said. "How did your practice go?" I asked.

"Okay I guess. Since we didn't put the monitors today I didn't have much to do."

I nodded. I was glad that coach Coto let me participate in everything.

I heard clapping and we turned around to look what was happening. Julio Ceasar had just blocked a shot by Hulk. Scolari was already on his feet, walking towards Hulk, giving him advice.

"This is kinda great." I said.

We watched the game for a while without talking when Alex broke the silence: "Wanna watch a movie, after lunch?"

"Yeah, sure." I said.

When the 5x5 ended the boys headed towards the fence and signed autographs to the fans and I headed towards my room for a shower. It was a hot day and getting inside the compound with the AC was such a relief.

I got to the restaurant quickly and spotted Alex. He was sitting with Peter. The families of the players were still there, eating lunch and talking. I wondered if Davi was still there.

"Hey." Peter told me as I approached them.

"Hi." I said.

"I was just telling Alex you can have our room for the movie." He said.

"You don't want to join us?" I asked him.

"Nah." He said. "I'll find something else to do."

"Well we can go to my room too. Marina won't be there anyway." I said. Peter's face darkened and I cursed myself mentally for not thinking before speaking.

I left them momentarily to get lunch and when I came back Peter was gone.

"He'll be alright." Alex said when I expressed concern.

I nodded, hoping he was right. We ate our lunch talking and laughing and I realized it was the first time I spend time with just Alex. He was much more interesting than I had thought and it was my fault I hadn't realized that sooner. I was too caught up with everything else.

When we finished eating we walked towards his room. He put a movie on his laptop and I sat on his bed. He closed the blinds and joined me. It was a comedy and it was a very funny one.

When the movie ended we took a walk.

"I never thought coming to Brazil would be that nice." I said. "Even if we technically haven't done much outside the compound."

"And it will be even better once the World Cup starts. We'll get to travel to all the cities Brazil plays at, the stadiums filled with people."

"Yeah... Football here is a celebration."

When we went back inside it was almost dinner time. I had a very good time with Alex today. He left to go to his room to charge his phone while I headed for the restaurant. I wondered if the families would stay for dinner too, but I got my answer when I walked in the restaurant and there was hardly anyone there. I spotted Peter sitting alone and I approached him.

"Where is everyone?" I asked, sitting next to him.

"They left."

"Left?"

"Yeah, they took the opportunity to dine out with family."

I nodded.

"But David was looking for you."
