"Hey there." I said after I knocked on the door to my room.
"Come in." Marina said.
Her eyes looked puffy and her face was red. I sat on the side of her bed and put my hand on top of hers.
"I just can't believe it." She said after a few minutes of silence. "That all this... all this effort, it was in vain."
"It wasn't." I said quickly. "You did your best. I'm sure Carlito did too."
"We never should have let him get up on that roof." Marina said and tears escaped her eyes again. I wrapped my hands around her as she wept. "I just... I don't want to feel like this."
"I know, I know. I'm so sorry." I whispered.
After a little while when she stopped crying she got under the covers again.
"I'm just gonna sleep it off." She said.
I nodded. "Call me if you need anything." I said before closing the door behind me. I run into Bernard on the hallway. "She said she wants to sleep it off." I repeated Marina's words to him.
"I should go in anyway." He said but he sounded unsure. I nodded and started walking away when he grabbed my arm. "Liv, this is just about Carlito, right?" He asked me, suddenly looking worried.
"Yeah." I said. "I mean... it was an awful thing."
He nodded as he quietly opened the door to our room. "Okay. Thanks." He said before he disappeared inside.
Truth be told, I wasn't entirely sure what was going on with Marina. It wasn't just Carlito, I thought, but there was no point in saying anything to Bernard, even though it looked like he had realized it too. How Peter fit in all of this, I wasn't sure.
But in 24 hours we would have to leave Granja Comary for Brasília, where we would play the next and last match of the group stage versus Cameroon. Cameroon was already eliminated and sans Alex Song who was suspended in their previous match versus Croatia but that didn't mean it would be easy.
And we had to win this one.
I knocked on Neymar's door and got inside.
"You know," he started saying when I closed the door, "This match will be our 100th in the World Cup. We have to win."
I laughed.
"What's so funny?"
"I was just thinking the same thing." I told him, sitting next to him on his bed. He was playing a game on his phone, lying on his bed shirtless and I couldn't keep myself from running my hands all over his torso.
He responded right away, letting his phone fall on the bed. He pulled me closer to him, kissing me hard.
A few moments later I felt something vibrate beside me and broke the kiss. "Your phone." I said, breathing hard. These days it was getting harder and harder to stop.
Neymar looked at the caller ID and with a look of utter annoyance picked it up and started talking in Portuguese.
"You have to go." He told me when he was finished. "Scolari is coming over in a—" He started saying when we heard a knock on the door.
I jumped from the bed so fast I was surprised I didn't hit the ceiling.
"The bathroom!" Neymar whispered frantically as he gathered my shoes from the floor. "I'm coming!" He yelled towards the door.
I grabbed my shirt and run to the bathroom and closed the door behind me and a second later I heard Scolari's deep voice as he entered Neymar's room.
