Hey guys! Until DMOL continues - until I have enough time to be able to keep a good posting schedule that is - I thought it would be fun to post a few flashbacks for some of the main characters.

It's easier for me as it takes a lot less time than DMOL because the flashbacks are smaller and focus only on one of the characters each time. They cover events before the World Cup starts.

They are in the third person and not the first like the rest of the story because I really wanted to write in the third person. I've regretted not writing DMOL in the third person as well.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy them and they make you like the characters a little bit more!

It was a cold Sunday morning. Marina was sitting on the edge of the bed, folding a piece of paper as neatly as she could. She placed it carefully on a big white envelope and sealed it, pressing hard with her fingers. She deposited it on top of the other identical ones.

After she got dressed she grabbed the envelopes and put them in her bag. She descended the stairs as quietly as she could. The sun had started to appear from behind the mountains that stood on the east of the town, tall and cold and barren. The house was silent. As she walked towards the door, she glimpsed at the living room. There was a hand, carelessly thrown over the sofa, her mother's body obscured from her view by the sofa itself. Marina couldn't wait to get out of there.

With a sigh she opened the door and walked out. It had snowed a few days ago and the remnants were still visible. Patches of frozen ice on the grass and dirty snow piles on the side of the road. Marina loved it when it snowed, when she was a kid. She remembered when her parents had took her to the mountain and they made angels in the snow together. That was a long time ago. Now she saw snow for what it really was. A terrible inconvenience.

She unlocked her bike and started biking. A few blocks later she came to a halt in front of a mailbox and threw the envelopes inside.

College applications. She had applied to as many schools as she could. She had a few safety schools just in case, because Marina really, really wanted to go to college. She wanted to escape this God forsaken town because if she stayed she knew she'd waste away and in a few years her life would be over.

She got on her bike again but didn't return home. Instead she arrived at a beautiful white picket fence house with two SUVs parked out front. She took her bike around the back and let it fall on the ground with a quiet thud. She started climbing the familiar tree next to it. When she reached the first floor she knocked two times on the window.

She heard him get up from the bed and pull the curtains. When he saw her he smiled widely.

"Hi." He said, opening the window.

"Hi." She answered, grinning at him as she got in.

"I didn't know you were coming." He told her but instead of answering, Marina locked her arms around his neck and pulled him close. He rested his own hands on her waist as their lips connected. He was as always, warm and familiar.

"Shush..." He whispered. "I think my parents are still sleeping."

Marina liked Ty's parents but she doubted they'd be thrilled to find her here. They were always nice to her, they weren't judging her based on her family like almost everyone else in this town. Marina was glad. It was a small town, she knew they knew everything there was to know about her family but they never acted any differently around her like most people did. They didn't think she was a lost cause. At least she thought they didn't.

"I sent my applications." Marina said. "Today."

"Me too, yesterday." Ty said. "So we have like two schools in common. Those aren't the best odds." He said.

She knew what he meant. The schools they had in common were a little out of Marina's league and they both knew it. Still, Ty would never say anything to make her feel uncomfortable.

"You never know." She said and he nodded. "I can't wait to get out of here."

Ty smiled. Marina knew he understood her, but it was different for Ty. He wasn't running away from anything. College to him was just college. Just the next natural step.

For Marina it was absolution.
