Summary: natasha surprises her daughter with a night of carving pumpkins after returning from her mission

Warnings: none

Word Count: 966

Nat knew that as you got older you probably wouldn't want to be hanging out with your mom as much, but she couldn't have been more wrong. Even though you were sixteen, you adored spending any time you could with your mother. Whenever she wasn't on a mission or working, you two would watch movies, go out to dinner, or even just sit and talk at the park.
Your mom had been gone for the past two weeks on a mission where she couldn't have any contact with you. This happened sometimes when she had to go on deep undercover missions, but you hated not knowing if she was safe or not.
When Nat arrived back from her mission, she went to the store and picked up some pumpkins since it was almost Halloween. She knew you would want to hang out with her so she thought you two could carve pumpkins tonight. This was something you did every year, but because Nat was away you hadn't had a chance to do it yet this year.

You heard someone's car pull into your driveway followed by footsteps on your porch. Your mom didn't text you saying she was on her way home so you panicked and grabbed a knife from the kitchen. You weren't an expert in combat, but your mom made sure you knew how to defend yourself in these situations. When you heard the doorknob turn, you were standing next to the door ready to attack. The second the door pushed open you went to lunge and attack the intruder just like your mother taught you to, but someone caught your hand. "Mom?" You said confused, "When did you get back?" You dropped the knife and hugged her tightly, you missed her so much. "I wanted to surprise you," she giggled, "good job, by the way, you're getting good with a knife."
"What's in the bag?" You asked when you noticed she was holding a grocery bag. "Well I know we haven't been able to carve pumpkins this year yet, so I figured we could now, only if you want to of course."
"Of course I want to! I missed you a lot mom," you said as you looked toward the ground. "I was really worried about you, two weeks is a long time to not talk to you." Nat knew that her going on long missions was always hard for you, but seeing how much you missed her broke her heart. She hated knowing you worried about her, "You don't have to worry about me malen'kiy pauk."
"I do though, I'm scared one of these days you aren't going to come back." Natasha felt tears form in her eyes, she never wanted you to worry about her dying. While everyone knows the risks that come with her job, she never wanted to scare you. "Hey," your mom went to gently grab your chin and raise your head so you were looking her in the eyes, "I will always do everything in my power to make sure I come home. Come on now, these pumpkins aren't going to carve themselves!" Natasha said playfully.
Your mom placed the pumpkins on the table and handed you a marker and a knife. You decided you wanted to carve a cat into your pumpkin and your mother was carving a simple face into hers. "Why is this so hard to do? You would think this would get easier every year!" Natasha said in frustration. "I thought you were good with a knife mom?" you teased. "I am! I just can't do crafts!" You just laughed at your mother's frustration.
All the stresses of the day melted away as you and Nat caught up and carved your pumpkins. You told her all about school, the book you started reading, the movies you watched while she was away, and even about your crush at school.
You looked over at your mother's pumpkin and laughed as she struggled to carve out a simple triangle. "You need help?" You laughed. "Why is this so hard?" Your mother replied, annoyed. "I thought you were good with a knife mom," you got up out of your chair and walked over to get a closer look at your mom's pumpkin, "but I guess I was wrong because this poor pumpkin looks like a crime scene," you teased. Your mom playfully punched you in the arm, "Hey! This is hard!" She got up to go look at your pumpkin, "How does yours look so good? How did you get so good at this?" She pressed a kiss on top of your head, "I would say I learned from the best, but" you motioned to her pumpkin. "Hey! Be nice to your mother," she teased. You missed nights like these. Nights where you and your mom just laughed the night away and the rest of the world melted away.
When you two finished your pumpkins, your mom lit two candles and placed them in each pumpkin. You carried them outside and placed them on the steps to your porch. "Yours look amazing malen'kiy pauk."
"I would say the same about yours mom, but-"
"Oh you better run you little-" Your mom said teasingly as she started to chase you around your front lawn. You ran as fast as you could, but of course, your mom caught you. She engulfed you in her arms yelling, "Got you!" As she picked you up and put you over her shoulder, "Mom put me down!" you said laughing so hard you could barely breathe, "Nope!" Your mother responded as you brought you in the house and put you down on the couch. You and your mom were laughing your asses off, "I missed nights like these."
"Me too malen'kiy pauk."
