"Y/N!" you heard your mother yell from the kitchen downstairs, "I made breakfast!"
"I'm coming!" you yelled back at her as you ran down the stairs.
You know your mom can't cook to save her life so you silently hoped when she said she 'made' breakfast that she just threw a bagel in the toaster. "Morning lyubov, your bagel's in the toaster."
"Oh thank God, I thought you tried to cook again" you let out a laugh. "Hey! My cooking isn't that bad!" You and your mom have always had a really good relationship. You were her world, her everything, and you knew she would do anything to protect you. You knew if anything ever happened to you she would never recover from it, she would blame herself for the rest of her life. When you were younger you broke your arm after falling outside when she turned her back for a split second. To this day she still gets mad at herself for looking away and 'letting you fall', even though you both know there was nothing she could have done to prevent that from happening.
You've been trying your best to make sure your mom doesn't have to worry about you, but that has been getting harder and harder as you got older. "So mom...are you cool if I drive myself to school today?" You got your license a few weeks ago, but have been avoiding asking to take the car. You knew she would let you take it, but you also knew she was going to freak out about it. "The school's only a 5-minute drive away so I thought it would be a good first place to drive by myself," you said after she didn't reply right away. You saw your mom take a deep breath before saying, "of course you can drive yourself to school," you noticed her forced smile. "Mom if you're not comfortable with me driving alone that's okay I was-" she cuts you off. "No, no I want you to take the car, you've had your license for a week now you should start driving by yourself," you see her force yet another smile.
"Just promise me you're gonna be careful okay? And wait hold on" your mother runs upstairs to grab a small button on a keychain. "What is that?" you take the button from her hands, "if you think you're being followed or something happens to you just press it, it'll tell me your exact location" she explained. "Thanks, mom" you took the button and put it on your keychain.
You grabbed your jacket and started heading for the door when your mom stopped you again. She grabbed you by your shoulders and turned you around to face her. "Make sure you don't go too over the speed limit ok?" You let out a laugh, "says you," your mother always went 20 to 30 miles above the speed limit. "Just please be safe, don't text and drive, don't-"
"I know mom you don't need to worry about me, I'm gonna be okay, it's just a 5-minute drive down the road" you reassured her, knowing she wasn't getting all stressed out about you driving. You know in her past your mom made a lot of enemies, and going after her daughter would be a good way to get to her. Whenever you were out of her sight, someone could come for you, and that terrified your mom more than anything. "I know" she smiled, a real smile this time, "I wouldn't be able to live if something happened to you, I won't let anything take you away from me."
Natasha Romanoff does not cry. But today, in this moment, she did. "I'm sorry lyubov, I'm making you late for school aren't I," she said wiping the tears from her eyes. "Mom it's ok," you said as you pulled her into a tight hug, resting your head on her shoulder. Your mom held you so tight and so close, kissing the top of your head before telling you to go to school. "I'll text you when I get there" you yelled as you closed the front door.
Natasha watched from the window as you pulled out of the driveway and watched until your car disappeared down the street. As promised, 5 minutes later she got a text from you reading:
[At school now! Love you <3]
She smiled and replied:
[Have a great day at school Y/N]

"Mom, I'm home!" you yelled as you unlocked the door. "Hey, how was school?" she replied as she was getting up to hug you. You let your mom pull you tightly against her while you told her about your awful day at school. You told her about the pop quiz you failed. You even told her that you sat alone at lunch because you had no friends at school. Your mother ran her fingers through your hair and held you close as you ranted about your day. Her hugs always had a way of fixing everything. You pulled away from your mother so you could show her the worst part of your day. You rolled up your shirt to reveal a decent-sized bruise on your stomach. "Did someone hit you at school?!" Your mother was outraged and was going to grab her phone and call the principal when you grabbed her arm. "What? No, we played dodgeball in gym and one of the football players threw the ball so hard at me that this happened" you said throwing your hands into the air in frustration.
Your mother motioned for you to lay down on the couch. "Let me take a look at this sweet girl," she said, raising your shirt again. She went to run her fingers over the bruise when you let out a gasp, "I'm sorry" she shouted as she quickly retracted her hand. "I can't believe that someone did this" she yelled as she went to get you an ice pack. "God what kind of ball were you guys even using" she angrily said as she placed the ice pack on your stomach. "We used a volleyball," you said, wincing as the ice pack touched your skin. "Why the hell were you using a volleyball" your mother was really pissed off, "What if that had hit you in the head? You could have gotten a concussion!" You went to grab her hand, "Mom I'm okay, it's just a bruise, I'm still in one piece" you tried to joke. "I know" she leaned down to kiss your forehead, "I just don't want you getting hurt."
"I know, but I can handle a little bruise," you smirked at your mother. "I know a strong girl, how about I make you some tea and we can watch a movie?" You smiled, loving when you got to spend time with your mom, "that sounds great."
Your mom made tea and put your favorite movie on. She pulled a blanket over the two of you before saying, "I'm still going to call the school tomorrow, I want to make sure this never happens again," she said, pulling you in closer to her. "I'm sure it won't after you call, you're pretty scary when you wanna be" you smiled up at your mom knowing she would do anything to keep you safe.
