I looked at Adam, sizing him up. And no, not like that. I was mentally calculating when he would use his prize wish. And what he would use it for.
I was wondering when to use mine, because if he wanted something I couldn't do, I would use mine to undo (or whatever) his wish. I know, that sounds stupid, but you haven't gone through what I have. Okay, enough of the pity party.
"So," he drawled. "Like what you see?" And then, randomly: "Oh, just thought of another one!"
Here it comes.
"If you were a penny, I'd pick you up." I groaned. "That was sexy babe. I think I know what I want to use my wish on, if you know what I mean." He winked at me.
I recoiled slightly. "Green beans!" I yelled. Wait, what? I felt like what Adam's face was showing. A complete 'WTF?' look. "I mean, if you were a hundred dollar bill, I'd leave you where you were. Like I wish you would do with the pick-up lines. Because they aren't getting anywhere."
"Ouch, Stace. That hit me right here." He pounded on his chest, right about where his heart should have been. If he had one, that is.
Then a new voice came up from behind me.
"Just kiss already, you two. Maybe go farther. The tension between you is obvious. The sexual tension, that is," Angel said.
I froze where I was, but Adam winked at me. Again. Maybe he had a twitchy eye? I don't know, but something was wrong. Maybe he had IEI (Inflated Ego Issues). Symptoms: bigheadedness, cockyness, and arrogance. Best approach: say something to deflate. Probably something along the lines of "Away, you three-inch fool!" Thank you Shakespeare.
"I'm game if you are," he said. I shuddered inwardly.
I heard Angel tap something, then she said, "Ugh, you know, sometimes I wish I had smarter friends. Greg wants in Layla's pants, and maybe more than that, and Layla wants the same, but they are too shy to talk to each other, let alone go farther. Sexual tension people. Not good. Definitely not good."
Angel walked away, and I relaxed a little bit, holding some breath unconsciously. Thank goodness. She had been talking to Greg or Layla. But who talks to a guy like that?
I immediately answered my own question. Angel does.
When she was completely out of earshot, I sighed in relief, but Adam just stood there, watching me and pouting.
"I'm guessing that's a 'no' then, to my first wish?" he asked me, sticking his lower lip out in a classic pout.
I nodded.
It was his turn to sigh. I almost laughed, but it was pretty serious to me, considering my...history... with humans of the opposite gender.
"Fine. Will you consent to watching some movies with me tonight? And I get to question you." I almost laughed at the first part, but then he said la seconda parte (the second part), and seemed legit, so I thought about it.
I cocked my head to the side. I don't think there was anything bad that could happen to me in the Black's house, and Adam had never done anything more than pick-up lines and innuendos to me. I think I was safe. Besides, I don't think that Adam would do anything. As big as his ego was, I don't think he'd be too upset that I wouldn't, you know, do the deed with him. But then again, that's what I thought about him, and look where that got me.
But I knew more now. I was prepared. I had so many different defenses and attacking skills now than I did then... But enough with the reminiscing! Seriously. Ugh.
"Hey," Adam said. There must have been a long silence that stretched on for a while. "You okay? You know you don't have to if you don't want to." He seemed concerned. But so did-
