Uh-Huh

Well, I tried.

"Wait!" I heard Adam call. Sighing, I stood still, but tensed when he laid a hand on my shoulder.

"Remove. Your hand. Now," I said in my deadliest voice. He held both of them up in surrender, and I continued to walk. He reached out to grab my shoulder, but I moved it forward so he missed. I did not like casual contact. Nope, not me. I took a deep breath, kicked the stand off of my bike, and put on my helmet. Turning the key in the ignition, I revved off.

I could have sworn he said something about see you at home May. Creepy, right? Goodness, you'd think saving someone from possible expulsion would make them grateful, but noooo.

Anyways, I put that off. What would happen would happen.

I glanced in my rear-view mirror and snaked my head back in surprise. There was a frantic Angel, running after me, waving her hands in a desperate attempt to catch my attention. I took a deep breath and pulled off the road, then slowed to a stop.

I waited for her to catch up to me before turning around.

"I was under the impression that you were going home today," I said, voicing it more like a question.

 "Uh, yeah, about that..."

Oh boy, here it comes.

"You see, I well, I-" That's when someone came roaring by. I had heard them coming, so I was prepared, braced, and flipped them the bird as they went by. Angel, on the other hand, was completely not ready, and would have fallen over had I not caught her.

"Angel," I said, looking for the right words to say. "You need to go home. Your parents are probably missing you, and there's no way you can avoid them forever. Besides, we can only do so much for you for so long at the May residence."

She narrowed her eyes at me. Yep, I screwed up with that.

"Now you listen here Stacy May." I had a feeling this was how she started most of her most intimidating speeches. "I've had just about enough of that house, what with all of their fighting and calm hate and anger at each other and me. I've had just about enough of their fake public face and the verbal abuse at home. And as for avoiding them forever? Watch me. Watch me do just that. They'll try to freeze my bank account, but I'll get around that. They'll put out a missing person's report after today, but if the cops come to school and try to drag me back there, I'll never go.

"And as for staying at your place? Well, I'll get a job and give seventy percent of the profit to you guys. I'll earn my keep, I promise. But I'm never, ever going back to that house."

I looked at her, trying not to show emotions, but I was so happy that she was going to be staying. Keeping a calm face, I coolly took off my helmet and handed it to her. She took it, and a grin broke over my face.

"Then welcome to the May residence. I hope you have a good stay." She smiled too, climbed on, and I toed the speed limit all the way home.

I plopped onto my bed and mumbled through the pillow, "Angel, start looking through the classifieds for a job."

I didn't see her face, but it must have been something like a freak-out moment. "U-uh..." Did she suddenly turn mute or something? Maybe she ran out of words for the day.

I sighed and rolled over. "Girl, what's your problem? Speak." Lord, was I talking to a dog? Sometimes it felt like it.

Then I saw her problem. And it was my problem too now. Great. Her- our problem was a six foot monster that was standing right outside of my room on my balcony. Wait, scratch that. It was a six foot monster that was sitting outside of my room on the balcony. And my mood took an immediate turn towards sour. Now I was tired and annoyed and ready to kick someone (probably the problem) in the balls.
