In the busiest city of New York, Emily Taylor loves to dance after watching her uncle, Sky who is a professional dancer in New York and her biggest inspiration. Emily would watch Sky perform at dance competitions with his dance partner and girlfriend, Paige Smith and would want to become just like them one day.
Emily was born and raised in New York all her life, she lives in an apartment with her single dad, Scott. Her mother, Martha left her when she was just 4 years old after her parents got a divorce. Martha moved out of New York and return to London, UK, leaving Emily to be raised by Scott.
After Martha left, she lost contact with Emily and never bothered to come back and visit her, not even send her letters or birthday and Christmas gifts. Every year, on her birthday and Christmas, Emily ask her dad if her mom has send her a present, but Scott always replies the same answer - no.
This leaves Emily devastated and angry, feeling like her own mom has forgotten about her and she knew that her mom is never coming back and that she'll never see her again. Emily broke down in tears when she finally have to face the reality.
Nothing could distract Emily from this grief, except when it comes to dancing. Dancing made her forget all of her worries, including her mother, it's her place to escape from reality. While growing up, Emily learns to dance and Sky teaches her some basic moves, he isn't just her teacher, but also her first dance partner.
One day, during dance lessons with Sky, Emily ask him an interesting question. "Uncle Sky?", Emily asked. "Yes, sweetheart?", Sky asked. "Do you think I'll be able to see my mom again?", Emily asked. Sky is speechless by her question and looks at her.
"I don't know, Em. Your mom hasn't seen you since you were 4 years old and she never been able to see you since she left.", Sky sighed. "I really miss her.", Emily sighed. "I know, you do.", Sky sighed. "I just wish she was here and I would be able to see her again.", Emily cried, as Sky pulls her close to him and comforts her in his arms.
"You will see her again, I know you will.", Sky sighed, with a whisper, as Emily listens to his word, which makes her smile. After hearing some words from her uncle, Emily makes her goal to become a successful and professional dancer like Sky, and hoping that her mother will see her perform one day.
At 12, Emily began to take dance lessons at the Broadway Dance Center, where Sky teaches and of course, Emily is one of Sky's students. She even made friends in her dance class, she befriend two girls, Genevieve Lane and Juliette Everhart, who became her best friends and the three became inseparable since Day 1.
Emily starts off with beginner's classes and dances solo for a while until she reaches to the teenage classes, where she is able to dance with a male partner. Emily would often change partners every month, until she would be able to have a permanent dance partner when she reaches adult classes. Emily continues to dance hard and join Sky's class soon.
