tw: internalised homophobia

Minji woke up as the first rays of the morning sun peeked through the curtains. A smile tugged at the corners of her lips when she saw that Yoohyeon was still sound asleep, snuggled up against her chest. She looked so content, so peaceful.

And so pretty.

Minji wondered how she had never noticed how beautiful the younger girl was. She didn't know if it was the way the morning light illuminated Yoohyeon's face, or the way her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, but her lips just looked so inviting in that moment that all Minji wanted to do was to lean in and kiss her-

No, Minji quickly shook her head, pushing the idea out of her head. What the fuck, Kim Minji?

She knew she liked Yoohyeon. She liked seeing her smile, hearing her laugh and... just being around her in general. She cared for her, and she would do absolutely anything to protect her. She liked her, as a friend. But that was it, right?

She remembered her father's words. How he had gone feral and threatened to cut ties with his brother after Gahyeon came out and presented them Yubin. 'Your daughter brought shame to our family,' he had said. In other words, same sex relationships were 'immoral' and 'shameful', and Minji had grown up believing that to be true.

So she shouldn't be having these kinds of feelings for Yoohyeon.

But as she lay there, with Yoohyeon's head on her chest and her heart beating against her ribcage, she couldn't help but wonder if her father was wrong. Her gaze returned to the younger girl's lips, as she imagined what it would be like to kiss her. How they would feel against hers. How they would taste.

As the minutes ticked by, Minji found herself unable to resist. She leaned in, tentatively at first, and gently pressed her lips against Yoohyeon's. It was brief, but still enough to send a jolt of electricity through her entire body.

It was at that moment when she realised what she was doing. Her eyes widened in horror as she quickly pulled away, heart pounding in her chest. What have I done? She closed her eyes tightly, desperately trying to shut out those sickening thoughts. She felt disgusted with herself. What is wrong with me?

She lay still and tried to go back to sleep, but her sudden movement had caused Yoohyeon to stir. 'Good morning,' the younger girl slowly opened her eyes to look at Minji, seemingly oblivious to the situation.

'Good morning,' Minji replied, her heart still racing 50 miles per hour. Heat rushed to her face as she recalled what she had done, and she was suddenly grateful for the dim lighting of the room. Yoohyeon shot her a sleepy smile, once again burying her face in Minji's chest.

They lay there for a few moments, simply enjoying each other's company. Minji ran her fingers through Yoohyeon's hair, feeling the soft strands slip through her fingers. They both went back to sleep.

When they woke again, it was by Bora from the hallway. 'Rise and shine, bitch!' She flung open the door and barged in, only to stop dead in her tracks as she took in the scene in front of her. 'What the fuck?!'

Both girls sat up frantically, exchanging panicked glances. 'It- It's not what it looks like!' Yoohyeon shook her head, her face flushed red.

'Suuure,' Bora raised an amused eyebrow. 'You guys seem pretty... occupied right now.' She laughed awkwardly.

'It's really not-'

'It's okay. I'll, um, leave you guys to it,' Bora backed out of the room. 'Have fun.' Yoohyeon heard her sister's bedroom door slam at the other end of the hallway.

'Well, that was weird.' She turned her attention to the older girl, who quickly averted her gaze upon meeting Yoohyeon's. Minji cleared her throat, trying to shake off the awkwardness. 'Yeah, it was.'

Yoohyeon frowned. 'Is everything okay?'

'I'm fine,' Minji lied, forcing a smile onto her face. 'Just... Monday blues.'

Yoohyeon nodded, seemingly satisfied with the response, and stood up to stretch her limbs. Minji sat there, feeling numb and confused. She still couldn't understand why she had done it. She had never felt this way before, and she didn't know what to do.

'Well, I better get going now,' she mumbled, fiddling with her hands.

'Wait, you're leaving already?' Yoohyeon asked, a hint of disappointment in her voice.

Minji hesitated for a moment, feeling conflicted. A part of her wanted to stay, to spend more time with Yoohyeon. But another part of her knew that it would be best to keep her distance, at least for now. She needed to clear her head, to figure out what was going on with her.

'Yeah, I have some work to do at the cafe,' she lied, trying to keep her voice light. 'But I'll see you later, okay?'

The younger girl nodded, although she looked a little dejected. 'Okay,' she said softly.

'Take care of yourself, Yooh.' She gave Yoohyeon a small smile before turning and leaving through the door.

As she drove back to her house, she mentally cursed herself for being so selfish. She shouldn't let herself be distracted like this, not when Yoohyeon was still recovering from the trauma she had been through. She couldn't risk ruining the progress they had made by acting on her own feelings.

Handong was chatting with a group of regulars when she finally reached the cafe, her brain swarming with thoughts. She shot her a quizzical look as Minji rushed past her, but thankfully didn't ask any questions.

She dashed upstairs and into her room, where she flopped onto her bed and pulled the covers over her head. She lay there, unmoving, her heart racing and her mind in turmoil.

It doesn't mean anything, Minji told herself. Just a passing feeling, a short-lived infatuation. She had to believe that. But no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the memory of Yoohyeon's warm body pressed against hers, or the way her heart had burst with joy upon kissing her.

She groaned inwardly, feeling a sense of frustration and helplessness wash over her.

What is going on?
