Not Normal

Walking home Dawn couldn't get her conversation with David out of her head. The calm seriousness of his voice haunted her like a song that found itself ear warming into her brain. The wind sent chills down her body as the night sea breeze guided her on her way home. It was a wonderful night. Dawn couldn't remember the last time she had that much fun before her life became full of hospital visits and managing her grandparents medication. She couldn't even remember she had a conversation with someone she didn't work with or that wasn't her family.

David felt exactly the same way, besides his band of brothers the only humans he spoke with he considered lunch. Yet here he was considering what it might be like to speak with her again. Her name even, Dawn, it was warm and welcoming. Standing with the boys back inside their sunken home he was ripped from his thought of the strange and interesting girl.

"So who was the meal on the beach huh David" Paul choked out a laugh while slurping up his low mien.

"That wasn't a meal, that was of limits. We don't hunt her we don't watch her, you all leave Dawn alone.." David paused " Until I figure out what exactly I want to do, understood?" His glare ran over all the boys.

Needles to say they were confused. David had never deemed someone "off Limits" and they where going to give him absolute hell for it.

"Yeah man we get you no killing you girlfriend, mmhmm crystal clear." Marko always knew how to push David and once he started in Paul always followed.

" Totally old man, we wont eat the misses you have our word." Paul and Marko would never let David here the end of it.

"Will you two shut up, I think its nice. Why shouldn't David meet someone and not only want to kill them! It makes him closer to human then the likes of us. Shame on you both." Dwayne spoke loudly, his words instantly bringing the younger boys laughs to a halt. A sober feeling was in the air as the boys looked at each other. For years it had only been the 4 of them, killing to feel something like themselves, to keep the endless party going.

Dwayne had a major point, they hadn't had anyone to care about them since they all found each other and here they all where embarrassing David. Paul looked up at David and placed him food down.

"Sure until you know what you want to do we will follow your lead." He put his hand on David's shoulder.

"Yeah man we wouldn't do that to you, she seemed chill" Marko added in from his seat making David crack a small grateful smile to Dwayne for speaking up about it in the first place.

" Cut the waterworks and go eat stupid since you mad me pay for all this food in the first place" David spoke in his regular tone but something was different in all of them. It wasn't because of blood or booze, it was because for once they had hope that some new was coming. Someone new was here and it made them all feel alive.

After finally making it home Dawn climbed her stairs and made her way to her bathroom. With a smile she washed her face and undressed throwing on a big t shirt for bed. She stopped halfway to her bedroom and slowly pushed open the door to her grandparents room with a half hearten smile.

"Goodnight guys, I made a friend today." She smiled and closed the door.

Opening her window to let the breeze in and pushing the curtain aside Dawn flopped down in bed looking at the night sky while drifting off to sleep.

First their was the sound of waves crashing with kiddy music playing in the background then all at once there where bright lights filling their dreams. It was the Boardwalk and it was beautiful. Neither of them felt alone as if their dream was being mirrored, moving happened in almost slow motion. All at once they were falling, falling so fast.

Dawn and David both lurched awake. Dawn simply wiped her forehead and lay back down looking back out the window. Falling dreams are no big deal for humans and while it may have felt weird it wasn't anything out of the usual. David on the other hand fell from where he was sleeping panting and shaking, running a hand through his bleached hair looking around in a rush for his cigs or anything that would ground him. This was not normal at all. Vampires don't dream. He had absolutely no idea what was going on.
