A week had passed since the night a decision was made. Star could tell something was changing, building in a way. Each night, instead of going out to a party or scoring chicks booze or weed, David put the boys to work. Being the group's outsider, it was easy to see how they were preparing for something. Marko and Paul would come home each night with bags filled with seemingly random things. Bags of dirt, sheets, blankets, pillows, all the boys had never apparently cared about before. Each night the twins were sent out and they would never come back empty-handed. Star found it odd, that they were not only doing this task but seemed overjoyed to be doing it.
Dwayne was busy building long wooden boxes, at least 4 of them. They were very plain but deep, something was going to be placed in them. Even stranger still, he was making a wooden frame right around the entrance of the cave. Everything he would build would get placed directly in front of the door where all the light would seep in. They all shared knowing looks with each other, but no one would ever tell Star what was going on.
At least that is what she thought...
David had returned from his week-long absence. The first person he requested to speak with was her. Not his brothers, Star. She was confused, to say the least.
Walking out of her corner into the center of the cave she found David sitting in his wheelchair throne covered in a veil of cigarette smoke.
"The boys tell me you have questions." He was always one to be right to the point.
"Well, duh, everything is changing. Im not blind I know it's something big. I know no one is telling me about it for whatever reason I don't really understand I thought you wanted me to be one of the family." Star stood her ground looking up at him from lower in the center.
"Dawn asked me not to tell you until it was getting closer, but she is coming to stay." All the seriousness in his face fell away as a wide toothy grin took over, " she's coming to stay for good."
Instantly Star brightened up.
"Oh my god David, that's amazing! I'm so excited it is gonna be just like having a sister! Now I know what's got the guys acting so weird, I have to go I need to get stuff for her room or just girl stuff!" Star began to take off in a flash to the exit, only stopping when she felt a single cold hand on her wrist holding her in place.
"Star, no."
David's smile was there but faded, he was glad Star was taking a liking to his ray of sun, but he had to explain what this would entail. She couldn't help but look at him like a confused child being told to wait until Christmas.
"We need to be even more careful now, we can not give away under any circumstance that anything has changed, Star I want you to sit down."
Maybe it was everything happening with Dawn, her rubbing off on him. Maybe it was pure fear, or maybe it was just because it was a good day, but David had to tell Star how she was really made. Dawn had warned him that they all needed to be on the same page while he was helping her prepare for her new life. If things were going to work they had to be careful and now wasn't the time to keep anyone in the dark.
So that is what he did, he sat Star down and told her how she was given to him like a doll to play with by a monster he wouldn't name. He watched in pity as she realized what the worst of them was capable of, for fun.
Tears filled her eyes as she nodded.
"And this man if he ever finds out..."
"He will kill her. Even if she is one of us. Yes."
Star knew what she had to do. Letting a tear run down her face.
"Then I will help you. Whatever it takes David." She took in a shaky breath and nodded thinking for a moment.
