Two weeks have passed since the Shen family moved in. During these two weeks, the family learned more about each other, their dislikes, likes, and habits. Throughout the two weeks, Tang Shushui nourished the Shen family. He mostly fed them porridge and soup. Pork soup, wonton soup, corn soup, hot sour soup, chicken porridge, shrimp porridge, and many more were fed to the Shen family to nourish them.
Having been malnourished for so long Tang Shushui did not feed them heavy food for the first two weeks so he mostly fed them herbal and light food such as soup and porridge. The family had no complaints about this treatment, and since it's been two weeks Tang Shushui decided to finally feed them so heavy food.
He didn't go to work today because he was preparing for the dinner at Old Lady Jiangs tomorrow, and Li Shi Quing could handle the restaurant well, so he didn't worry. The afternoon was approaching so Tang Shushui came out of his room and went to the kitchen to cook.
Haohao was taking nap since he was exhausted and Tang Shushui didn't let Xiang Ai in the kitchen since she was already seven months pregnant.
Tang Shushui decided to make braised pork, scallion pancakes, sushi, wonton soup, and dumplings. For deserts, they would have some strawberry mochi, and they would drink strawberry milk as their beverage. After thinking about what they would eat for dinner Tang Shushui took out the ingredients needed out of his space.
He took seven jin of pork belly from his space, a cabbage, ground meat, flour, strawberries, and the vegetables needed for dinner. He would make the braised pork belly first, so he cut the pork belly into 3/4 inch thick pieces. Then he brought a pot of water to the stove to boil. He blanched the pork for a couple of minutes. He did so to get rid of impurities, so he could start cooking.
He took the pork out of the pot and set it aside. He put his wok on the brick oven and took some coal out of the fire so he could have low heat. He added oil and sugar to the wok, and waited for the sugar to melt slightly before adding the pork, he then added some coal so the fire so the heat would rise. He cooked it until the pork was slightly brown.
He took out some coal again to lower the heat and added some wine, regular soy sauce, and then dark soy sauce. It was important for this dish to be both colored and flavored, so he added two types of soy sauce. Then he added some five-star powder he got from his space.
He added a little bit of coal to raise the heat. He then covered the wok and let it simmer for about forty-five minutes. He checked on the pork every five minutes to stir it and added water if it was getting too dry. He then checked the pork with a chopstick to check if was tender. Seeing the pork belly was ready he went to make the dumplings.
He kneaded the dough and then made the filling with ground meat and minced cabbage, he added ginger, soy sauce, and five-star powder for taste. He made the dumpling skin from the kneaded dough and quickly wrapped up the dumplings. He then put it in a pot and let steam. He then moved on to the scallion pancakes, and they were made very quickly.
For the wonton soup, he took chicken broth from his space and boiled it. He already had wonton wrappers so he took out about twenty and let them boil in the broth as he stir-fried some leeks, bok choi, and some tofu and then added them to the broth of the wonton soup. He then boiled some Japanese short-grain rice with honey, handmade rice vinegar, kombu, and sea salt. He took the rice, salmon, some nori sheets, wasabi, and cucumbers and made some simple sushi.
He then took out a bag of mochi from his space, along with a gallon of milk. He crushed his strawberries and boiled them with white sugar until they were sticky and mushy. He took out twenty bottles and added the sticky strawberry on the bottom and then filled it with milk. The last thing he had was to make food for Yuan Fang's baby, so he took two dozens of raspberries out of his space and made a purree with them for the baby.
Seeing that everything was ready Tang Shushui took the food from the kitchen and started arranging them. The parents had just come from the village chief's house and were surprised to see the feast on the table. Jiang Yanwei went to pick up the children and was also met with this scene. The children were excited and hurriedly greeted Tang Shushui. Tang Shushui went to call the rest of the family for dinner. Seeing that everybody was there, Tang Shushui asked the question that was on everybody's mind.
"So mom, how did it go?" Tang Shuhsui asked, the worry on his face evident.
"At first the village chief hesitated since it was the first time he encountered such a request but it doesn't say it was illegal or immoral so he had to agree." His mother responded unable to conceal the happiness in her voice.
"So we can have our own genealogy?" Jiang Yanwei asked, his eyes filled with excitement.
"Yes, he said so." Mother Jiang responded happily.
"Then we can go to the Magistrate's office and make it official next week." Tang Shushui proposed.
"That would be great." Mother Jiang agreed along with the rest of the family.
All of their family has only given them pain and horrid memories, so they came up with the idea to make their own family that would be the opposite of that. They are all broken people, and they've found people just as broken as them. Nobody knows each other's pain more than them. From experience, they could all relate to each other. They're all broken people on their path of healing, and they don't want constant interruptions and blockings on their path, so they might as cut off all ties with their sources of pain, and change their names.
"I think our family name should be 'Zhāngjié' meaning 'chapter' since we're closing an old chapter of our lives and opening a new one." Tang Shushui explained carefully, the smile on his face couldn't be any wider.
The family directly agreed and another round of crying also happened. Tang Shushui was also crying. He was very eager toward the family when he first met them. He was trying so hard because he didn't want to be rejected after being given a second chance with a family. He tried his best to please them so that they wouldn't push him away, he was scared of being scarred again by a family, but he was wrong.
This family has shown nothing but care and support for him. Even though he spent so much money on a house, they didn't say anything. He guessed that they saw through his facade, and saw how much he craved affection. They never exploited him for his money even after seeing his weakness.
Seeing a warm atmosphere and the cheers at the table, he suddenly thought it wouldn't be so bad to take it slow. He would take his time to get to know his family and care for them. He would be patient with them. He had his whole life in front of them so why was he rushing? His eyes swept over the table once more and a fulfilled smile resided on his face. Yes, this was his new chapter.
