The coming days went by idly. The nobles kept coming to their restaurant, which attracted many other nobles. Hence their reputation once again grew, and they finally attained the title of the best restaurant in town. All the employees would walk with their heads held high, especially those with circumstances. The one that was the proudest was of course Tong Donghai.
Since he had started working for Tang Shushui his life had been getting better. He remembered the first time he got paid. He got paid two taels of silver. The first thing he did was to get a physician to see and take care of his father. The prescriptions of his father alone cost a tael. He knew he had to do more and that this wasn't enough to sustain his family.
The other tael of silver was used to buy groceries, and get help with their farming land. He didn't need to worry about other things since they had most of these things already, but they needed money to treat his father. This was why his mother barely gave him any freedom and forced him to go to school.
His father's mother, Yu Qiang, just like her name was a great beauty. She was so beautiful that growing up her parents had to always cover her face with mud in order to protect her. Her beauty was so great that it turned into a calamity. Growing up she dressed very plainly and barely wore any makeup so her appearance could dim a little, which of course never worked. But even though Yu Qiang was a great beauty, she also had a strong character. Her father noticed and hired a master to teach her martial arts. Her martial arts were so great that even the then-emperor heard of it. But Yu Qiang said that this was merely for entertainment and did not want to join the army, so she was not forced.
She eventually married Tong Yao the eldest son of a landlord and settled down. She gave birth to two daughters and a son for Tong Yao. Her eldest is her son, Tong Chuanli, then her daughter, Tong Jingjing, and her youngest, Tong Jinghua. Lou Yao was said to be very loyal to his wife and had never taken in any concubines. The family was known to live in harmony.
But during the Lu rebellion, Mei town, the town they lived in had been raided and burned to the ground. Tong Yao and Yu Qiang were not in the same place during the rebellion hence they were separated. Yu Qiang was still very good at martial arts and managed to save quite a lot of money, land deeds, and jewelry. Almost everybody in town decided to relocate to Wen villages.
Because the two were separated, Yu Qiang decided to search for clues about Tong Yao, and all the evidence she found pointed out that he was alive. Yu Qiang decided to look for him in Wen village and indeed found him. But she found him, with her cousin who lived with her because she was orphaned, and they even had two kids. Yu Qiang was so mad that he beat both Tong Yao and her cousin, Yu Shan half to death, and she of course made their affair known to the village, but almost nobody took her side, as her husband didn't find her and decided to remarry. But only she knew that this affair had been going on for much longer than that.
So with the money she was able to save, she build a big brick house, bought a large amount of land, and raised her children. Tong Yao was surprised that his wife could do all of this, and wanted to go to her but, Yu Shan would always threaten him with their children.
Yu Qiang made a living by hunting and was known as the tigress beauty of the village. After both her daughters were married she decided to enroll in the army to make more money and hasn't been back since. She would still send money from time but because she was now at war it not possible for her to do so. His father suddenly fell ill, and because of the lack of funds, he could not even see a doctor. The fields were too big for his mother alone, hence they were getting short on food.
Tong Jingjing, and Ting Jinghua, had been helping their brother but since they are married there's only so much they can do. So Tong Chuanli's wife, Yao Luli, had been putting pressure on Tong Donghai to be a scholar. Since Yu Qiang is away at war, there's a high chance of her dying, and if she does then the inheritance goes to her children. While most of the money and jewelry will go to her daughters, most of the land will go to her son. Her daughter can use and the money and jewelry and their husbands can't interfere with it, but the land is different. If the husband is greedy for it then they can just take it and it wouldn't even be that useful to the daughters. While the son can have the lands and be sure of his ownership of them. The money could be useful to the son, but he can work for it. Yu Qiang knew her daughters would need the money more. She made sure that they put a happy divorce fund aside just in case.
So Tong Chuanli was left with most of the land, and if he were to pass away, Tong Yao could go and claim because he and Yu Qiang never actually divorced, and even if they did, they didn't have any evidence. So everything they had now would belong to Yu Shan and Tong Yao. Yao Luli of course felt reluctant to give up her home, so she put all the pressure on Tong Donghai. Tong Donghai was helpless and obeyed his mother at the beginning but as soon as he got the job, he rarely did so.
