"They lived happily ever after." He whispered as he looked himself over in the mirror, a small golden band now adorning his finger. The two weren't legally able to be married, but Shuyang had nonetheless put a ring on MingRui's finger.With a small bit of hesitation the man straightened out his shirt and exited the bathroom. The small home was busy and full of friendly voices. MingRui's stomach fluttered with warmth as he breached into the living room and observed his more so family. ZeYu held tight to the newborn in his arms and made occasional coo's and gurgles in response to the child's.
Though the man thought of Hanyu as his son, this little girl was a completely different ball game.
"Are we ready?" Xinlong spoke as his voice cut through the mingling conversation. Each head perked up as Kara, Lona and Dela decided unanimously that they'd stay at the house.Zihao left a small peck on Lona's temple and another on their son's, before joining Xinlong in the middle of the living room. ZeYu gently handed the baby girl to her mother and gave the woman a small, loving pat on the head. "We'll be back soon." He explained quietly. "Be careful and come home to me." Dela whispered while embracing her husband, hoping for nothing more than for him to return as her first hadn't. "Don't worry. I always will." He whispered back, hugging her tightly before joining the others as they walked out the door.
:::::::::
ZeYu sat patiently in the bed of Shuyang's truck as they went over hill and bump. His mind raced yet he was superiorly calm. He thought of when he had come back after that night, telling Dela what he only wished could've been some sick joke. ZeYu contemplated the day he told Hanyu's mother, and confessed to his own that he would take responsibility for the baby.
The day Jia had sat ZeYu down and explained their relation, he didn't bat an eye. Nor did he stop her from explaining, though he had already been told by Ren.
Jia couldn't have been more accepting of ZeYu marrying her daughter-in-law and even offered her assistance in any way, as long as she got to know her son's child.
The rumbling of the engine ceased as the youngest of the group extracted the keys from the ignition and levered the door open, his older counterpart following.
Xinlong hopped out of the right side door and pulled up the waist of his jeans.Both Zihao and ZeYu scaled the tailgate and jumped to the ground, the tall grass prickling at their ankles.
MingRui held tight to the hem of Shuyang's jean jacket, eyes spiraling at the thought of being back here.
4 years. It had been that long already.
::::::
I stand and wait. Wait for them to walk forward. Wait for them to jump back into the truck. I wait for anything. I've been waiting all of this time.
A chilled wind whispered through the air as the leaves turned from green to dull shades of yellow and brown.
The first to step forward is ZeYu. His gangly legs used to make him look awkward and unsteady, but he's grown into them since we were young. He looked weathered, maybe having run into stress along his way. He was still a sharp 30.
"It's been a long time." He said aloud, his target unknown. A tingle ran up my spine as my being moved a bit closer to the man.
"I know I'm older now, but can you say something? Anything? Just so I know it's you." He hummed. His words were hushed but full bodied."ZeYu." I whispered, now impossibly close to the man, lips to ear and eyes boring holes in his skin.
"Hanyu?" He closed his eyes as his other senses faded, his whole body concentrated on my answer. "Yes." I replied.The wind stood still as ZeYu gasped in a few shallow breaths and his body began to quiver in an overwhelming bout of relief. His eyes tensed while crystal droplets formed at the corners. He breathed in a few more times before calming down.
"Did you meet him?" He asked after a moment of silence. He spoke softly of my son, heart tender. I nodded. "I did. You've done well, brother."
ZeYu's Adam's apple bobbed as he tried to hold back welling emotions, but failing. Years of pent up tears flowed as his body somewhat sunk into my spiritual comfort. "He's a good boy." He huffed as he wiped the tears from his cheeks and tried to recompose himself. "I know he is. She'll be just as good." I reassured as I recanted about his daughter. "She will be." He agreed.
"Dela misses you." You confessed, eyes still closed. I knew he rather not open his eyes while speaking to me, my physicality being nonexistent.
"Tell her I love her, will you? More than anything." I hum simply. He nods.
"Hanyu?"
"Yes?"
"Do you wanna play? We're all here." ZeYu asked as he clenched his fist and looked back at the group of men standing at the fence line.
"I would love to play." I said with a spark of excitement. Maybe now I could be a kid again.
