Chapter 14 - Make Amends

"I... I don't..."

Bong Bong's answer hasn't fully sank in yet to Imee when someone suddenly knocked, switching her attention to the door.

It was a nurse.

The nurse peeked her head inside the room and talked to Imee saying,

"Senator Imee? Excuse me lang po. Pwede po ba kayo maka-usap saglit? May papi-pirmahan lang po ako."

Imee replied,

"Ganun ba? Sige..."

She turned to Leni and said,

"Maiwan ko muna kayo ni Bonget, Leni. I'll be right back."

Imee then went out of the room to talk to the nurse.

Once Imee left the room, tears started to fall from Leni's eyes.

Bong Bong's answer left her crushed.

Leni put one hand over her eyes and cried, thinking that he no longer remembers her.

Her voice trembled as she said,

"After everything that we've been through, Junior? Hindi mo na ako naaalala?"

Bong Bong just looked at Leni as she cried.

The sounds of her sobbing filled the room.

Leni continued on crying until she felt Bong Bong reach out for her hand.

He gently squeezed it, making Leni stop sobbing as she looked back at him.

Finally, he spoke.

"I don't... think... I could ever... forget you...

... VP."

Leni was stunned. She said,

"A- ano? You mean..."

Bong Bong smiled weakly at her.

"I don't... have amenesia... Why think of that?"

Leni sighed and buried her head in her hands, both out of embarrassment and relief.

She then wiped her tears as she weakly laughed saying,

"Kanina pa ako umiiyak, Junior... Ba't di mo man lang ako pinigilan?"

Bong Bong teased her,

"You looked... So in the moment... I didn't want to ruin it."

Leni playfully hit Bong Bong's arm but instantly regretted it as he winced.

She immediately said,

"Oh my God! Sorry, Junior. May injuries ka pa pala."

"I'll be okay... I think."

Bong Bong's smile suddenly faded. Leni got concerned as she repeated,

"You think? What's wrong?"

Bong Bong then asked her,

"Have I lost you... To Antonio?"

Leni shook her head.

"Antonio? Ew. It was just a misunderstanding... Ano ba ang tingin mo sa standards ko, Junior?"

Bong Bong suddenly laughed. It hurt him physically but hearing Leni's answer felt like the pain didn't matter anymore.
