After Megan had spent the afternoon together with Nick, and she had listened to the stories of his parents with one or the other cup of tea, they moved into the guest house.

The guest house was located at the back of the property and also had a separate driveway.

Before Evelyn and Frank had hung up their jobs to enjoy their well-deserved retirement together, the guest house had served as a staff house.

It was a small but nice house, where theoretically a small family could live inside.

The facade was with the white and gray tones and the high and narrow windows adapted to the main building.

A hedge of box trees separated the garden of the guest house from the main garden and provided additional privacy.

Inside, everything was modern and Nick revealed to her as they entered that all of this was his doing.

After his parents no longer needed staff and the house was vegetating unused, Nick had decided to work on this house in his spare time - so everything was furnished and decorated to his taste.

The main colors were white and anthracite, and here and there you could discover small splashes of color in petrol and mustard yellow from the decoration.

Together they took their luggage to the upper floor where the master bedroom with adjoining bathroom was located.

"So you did all this yourself?" asked Megan as she sat on the bed next to her suitcase and opened it.

"Yeah, I couldn't let the jewel rot here after all."

"Ok, yes I understand that but why did you put so much money and work into this even though you live in Washington?"

A grin formed his lips as he just hung one of his shirts on the clothes hook and pondered the question.

"To be honest, I had always hoped to come back here. In my imagination, I pictured watching my children take their first steps in the living room, meanwhile the family dog, Pongo, buried his bones in the backyard."

From the side, he glanced at Megan and studied her reaction. He tried to read from her facial expressions and gestures what she thought of the idea, after all, it was she with whom he could envision that future.

"Pongo, then?"

"Is that the only thing you can think of?"

"That's why I love Disney movies, yes. The name fits a Dalmatian perfectly."

Nick's heart warmed and he could feel the endorphin spreading through his veins throughout his body as he heard Megan recall the small detail that he would like to have a Dalmatian someday.

"But that sounds like a nice idea," Megan said as she wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, hugging him and placing a small kiss between his shoulder blades.

"So you like that idea?"

"Well, I've always wanted to get out of Washington - I wasn't thinking about Staten Island, but it's a nice idea, even if it means my family and friends won't be near me. But there are such things as flights, and I don't expect we'll be doing that idea right away."

Nick grabbed Megan's hands and turned to her.

For a brief moment, the two just stared at each other, forgetting the world around them for that moment.

His hands slid down her shoulders to her waist and with a flourish he lifted her up and spun her around in a circle once before setting her down and placing his lips on hers.
