6 months later
Like every morning, the rising sun shone through the glass front of the bedroom and danced across the faces of the couple in love.
Megan was the first to awaken from her slumber and immediately, after stretching once vigorously in all directions, she turned to Nick.
She loved to watch him sleep in the morning, at that stage of the day when he was slumbering so peacefully and at his most vulnerable.
How the morning sun bathed his skin in a golden orange light and cast deep shadows under his sharp jaw.
Sometimes it took her a few moments to realize that she wasn't dreaming, but that it was her reality, lying in bed together with the unexpected love of her life and feeling nothing but happiness.
A crooked grin flashed on his lips as Megan caressed his face with soft kisses.
He loved it when she woke him up like that and he loved that when he opened his eyes she was the first thing he got to see.
To him she was the most beautiful and breathtaking woman in the whole world and he could hardly believe his luck to be able to call her his fiancée.
About 3 months ago, when they had finished the whole trial and finally knew that the psychopath who had kidnapped and tortured Megan would spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars, Nick had discovered a ring in the window of a jeweler while shopping.
At that moment he just knew that this ring was made for Megan, and that they were made for each other and he never wanted to have another woman next to him in his life.
A few days later he went to the jewelry store and bought the silver ring, which had two small diamonds and one larger one, and reserved a seat at his brother's restaurant.
Nick had surprised Megan with a little trip, pretending that they would escape Washingtont for a few days and visit his brother, his wife and Lilly.
On the second day of the trip, in the evening, the moment had arrived.
They had both filled their bellies with the delicious food, when suddenly the song resounded through the speakers, to which they had danced together for the first time.
Even though Megan had initially blushed when Nick asked her to tango, she finally agreed and they danced together more passionately than ever before.
Looking back, Megan would say that she already had a feeling about what followed.
After the dance was over, Nick knelt down in front of her with a ring box, the diamonds reflecting the light from the industrial style lamps, and the whole restaurant suddenly went silent, all eyes on the two of them.
Megan had tears in her eyes as he confessed his love to her once again and asked her if she would honor him and become his wife - Nick just had a talent for always choosing the right words at the right moment.
And now they were lying here next to each other in his apartment, happier than ever before.
Like every morning, the two of them just stared at each other for a while, absorbing every little detail of the other, almost as if they had the urge to burn the image of the other and this moment into their memory forever.
"Good morning, Buttercup." he said in his raspy and sleepy voice as he pulled her into his arms.
"Good morning, Butterfinger."
"Ready for today?"
"Ready as I've ever been!" she exclaimed as she pushed him onto his back and swung onto his hips.
