Adira felt her insides churn as she was lifted high up in the air before being brought back down to the floor, she tumbled a few times, landing perfectly before lining back up and continuing on with the choreography . They continued to dance along to the music coming from the marching band and the loud cheers from the students around the hall. They finished the dance off and all went to make their way off the courts.
Adira was making her way over to the stands when she made eye contact with a familiar long, curly haired brunette boy in the back of the stands, his eyes were on her and she had felt him watching her for practically the whole dance. He grinned over at her and she gave him a small smile back before looking away and making her way over to where the rest of the cheerleaders were now standing
"and lets hear it for your tigers!" the basketball team suddenly came running out of the locker room, the cheers from the crowd increased significantly in volume as the boys all ran out in their basketball uniforms, ready and pumped for the game
"Good morning Hawkins High!" Jason yelled out, "First off! hey, first off I would like to thank each and every one of you. Without your support, we wouldn't be here. Give yourselves a big hand!" the crowd clapped loudly
"And of course, I have to give a special shout out to the best, and the prettiest fans of all time! the tiger cheer squad!" A few of the girls all cheered out loudly whilst Adira was just clapping along with the crowd, she wasn't the biggest fan of the blonde haired jock nor almost the rest of the basketball team
"Chrissy. Chrissy I love you babe," Jason said and looked directly at his girlfriend who was next to Adira. Chrissy grinned over at him and blew him a kiss to which the crowd awed. Adira had to admit that the two of them had a very cute relationship and he did treat her well most of the time. Adira grabbed her friends shoulder softly and shook it in excitement for her friend
"you know, I think that I can speak for all of us when I say that it has been a tough year for Hawkins," Jason said and Adira had to refrain from rolling her eyes if only you really knew
"so much loss..." the hall had gone silent, while most of them hadn't had to deal with what only a handful of them did, all of them had suffered from the hands of the upside down and the destruction it brought to the small town, "and sometimes I wonder, 'how much loss can one community take?' In dark says like this, we need something that we can believe in."
"So last night, when we were down by ten points at half to Christian academy. I looked at my team, and i said 'think of jack' 'think of Melissa' 'think of heather' 'think of billy-'"
Adira felt a tear run down her face at the mention of his name... memories of him dying in front of her pulsed through her mind over and over... she missed him so much but he was gone. He had been taken from her and left her alone.
Chrissie looked over at her friend and placed a hand on her leg softly in attempt to comfort her but she pulled her hand away as soon as the girl flinched at the touch
"think about our heroic police chief Jim Hopper, think about each and everyone of our friends who perished in that fire. What did they die for? for us to lose to some... some crap school? No"
"No!" The crowd cheered back
Adira was on the edge of leaving the hall, her frustration and anger was only building as the boy talked more and more. They didn't die for your stupid game of basketball.
"For us to return home with out heads hung low in defeat?" He called out
"NO!" The crowd exclaimed. And that was it. Adira stood up from her spot on the stands and left. She walked past the crowd and out the doors of the gym, tears falling down her face quickly as she ignored all of the gazes of sympathy she had got as she walked past the people of her school.
She made her way to her locker and grabbed her bag and skateboard that she had left there the day before and then made her way to the back of the school. Her eyes were red and her cheeks were puffy as she went to drop her skateboard on the ground and ride away but she was suddenly cut off by a voice behind her
"You okay?" the boy asked and Adira turned around to look at him, not knowing what to say. He grabbed something out of his pocket and then walked over to it, holding it out to her. She looked down at his hand and realised that it was a blunt
"no thanks," she choked out softly as she shook her head. He nodded his head softly in surprise before putting it back in his pocket, he had never seen someone turn down free weed before
"Jason Carver hey? Real dick isn't he?" he asked in amusement, a chuckle falling from his lips as he looked down at the short girl next to him. As he looked closely at her face he could see how exhausted she really looked.
"Tell me about it," she muttered out. She hesitated for a moment before looking up at him, "what are you doing out here Eddie?" She asked him, not wanting to sound rude, but also wanting to know why he had followed her, the two of them weren't exactly what you would call friends, they had only talked to each other 3 or 4 times
"Just wanted to make sure that you were okay... that was pretty rough back there, I thought that maybe you could use some company, or maybe you might want to talk about it to someone," Eddie muttered out to her, the truth was, he had taken a great interest in the girl.
Before he had actually talked to her the first time, he had expected her to be a stuck up bitch who didn't know anything about anything besides makeup and animals but he was instantly shocked to find that his assumption was way off.
She was nothing like he had expected, she liked cars and skateboarding, she liked games, animals and shopping, and she loved to read.
"I just feel so... i don't know, lost?" She muttered out, not really knowing how she could describe how she was feeling right now, "there has been so much shit going on over the last few years and it feels like everyone is just moving on ya know... forgetting," she said to him, her ocean blue eyes staring sadly into his chocolate brown eyes, "and I don't know if I can move on... and I don't know If i want to forget."
He nodded his head softly, there was just something about her, something so delicate and fragile yet immaculately strong. He didn't know that much about her, but he knew that she had lost her boyfriend last year in a fire, and he also believed that she had gone through a lot more than that
"You can move on without forgetting everything," Eddie told her, he wasn't good at giving advice so he tried to choose his words carefully, the last thing that he wanted to do was upset the girl even more, "moving on is important, but remembering is important too because you cant remember all the happy things if you don't remember the sad things too."
She put a fake smile on her face and nodded her head, "i guess so," she said though she wasn't entirely sure that she believed it. At this point, all the pain that she was feeling made her want to forget it all, "what if it hurts so much that it would just be better to forget it all?"
"I don't know," he admitted, "sadly we don't get that choice."
"Yeah," she muttered, "I just th-" she was suddenly cut off by the bell, announcing that the pep rally was now over and it was school time, "Shoot, I uh..." she contemplated leaving school like she had initially planned on doing but then decided against it, "I gotta go and find Lucas and congratulate him on making the team."
Eddie nodded his head with a small smile, "you ever considered joining a D&D club?" he asked her suddenly
A smile made its way onto her face, "for sure... just not with a bunch of sweaty boys who practically live in their mommy's basement," she said with a grin
"well maybe I can change your mind?" he said suggestively, raising his eyebrow at her
"I doubt that Munson," she replied and turned around to make her way back into school, "I highly doubt that."
He watched her walk inside, I wide smile playing on his face as he felt his heart thumping violently against his rib cage. He rubbed his neck softly before shaking his head, "man...:
