Prologue

Our giggles could be heard in the dark night, the leaves under our feet crunching as we quickly walked to our spot. This was a tradition for Steve Harrington and I throughout our Summer together. This is our love story, the king of Hawkins High and the broken girl, trying to get her shit sorted.

It was all a blur on how I met Steve if I'm honest. I'm pretty damn sure it was a party that he had thrown once at his house. My best friends, Barbra Holland and Nancy Wheeler weren't invited, and neither was I, but Nancy was so admin about becoming cool this year that she overheard the popular table talking about the big bash starting the summer off at Steve Harrington's house.

We had made a plan that night. Well, Nancy and I did, Barb was a little unsure which is fair enough, as Barb is the none social butterfly in the group. Neither was Nancy, she was only social with her friends but for me, if there was a party and free alcohol, count me in. Neither one of them drank, they intended on me drinking so I could be their social butterfly and make friends for us. Nancy wanted nothing more than to be friends with Tommy H, Carol, and Steve.

I had hated all three of them—still do, might add, other than Steve. I got to know Steve that night. It was a complete and utter accident on me bumping into Steve and he spilt fruit punch all down my white dress, causing some stains that never came out. I had to burn that dress so my Dad wouldn't have found out.

We kept seeing each other, Steve and I. In secret. It was good, it was fun until I had drunkenly confessed to Barb and Nancy what I had been doing all Summer. They know almost everything, just the minor details on what Steve and I do during our free time. You know, the birds and the bees kind of thing, I don't think their innocent little ears are ready for that.

And that's how I ended up at the Hawkins classic Skull rock, which was Steve's and my typical 'hangout' point. We loved it because it wasn't close to our town Hawkins. We could get away from everyone, and just be us.

As we gained close to our spot, Steve was already pulling me into his arms, and kissing me passionately. Steve and I aren't official yet, he's more my Summer fling, and that's what I planned him to be. Nothing more, nothing less, just us. I didn't want to become part of his gang with his asshole friends like Nancy did, no matter how many times she tried to encourage me to ask him out.

I wasn't sure if I was ready for that.

But I could tell Steve was and that made me scared as hell.

"I think we need to talk," I spoke to him, breaking the kiss as we stand beside the skull rock. "Like, seriously."

"Oh, seriously?" Steve quirked an eyebrow. "That's a change for Juno Hopper. Okay, you got me intrigued. What is it?"

"About us." I began, biting my lower lip out of a nervous habit I had created since I was younger. "You know... Hookups." This got Steve's full attention and I really didn't want to let him down. "It's just hookups, right? Like, you know that, right?"

"Uh—Yeah?" Steve seemed a little confused about what I meant.

"Okay, that's what I wanted to be established. Like, I know we established that since the party, but it's been two months since then, you know?" I tried to tell him the best way I could. I didn't miss his face fall slightly, which means I had let his hopes of us becoming a relationship, not a thing. "I don't want you thinking anything's changed about us."

"Uh, yeah, totally, of course." Steve plastered on a fake smile. "Juno, if you're trying to imply that I have a tiny crush on you, you're wrong. I mean, don't get me wrong, you're totally hot and really good in bed, but hookups only, yeah?"
