Chapter Four

"Okay, now I feel bad," I tell Nancy as we had woken up the next morning. My Dad had gone early, because last night he had found the body of Will Byers and this morning he's gone to tell Joyce and Jonathan. "Maybe we can interrogate Jonathan another day...?"

"On any other day I would agree with you, Juno, but Barb's life is on the line here." Nancy was picking up her things. "And if it means ditching school, and going to tlk to Jonatha, then I want to do it. We can't risk Barb's life."

"Okay, so, Dad's gone with Jonathan and Joyce to see Will's body," I figured out. "Uh... I don't know, where do you think he would be after that...?"

"I don't know," Nancy spoke quietly. "Maybe we just go to school and maybe he's gonna show up afterwards."

"I wouldn't," I respond. "I mean. I wouldn't show up to school if my sibling died." Not only do I want to see Jonathan about Nancy, but I want to comfort him in some way. I know what it's like losing a younger sibling, it may not seem like it, but it does get easier. Eventually.

"There's a chance," Nancy said. "Now, come on. We're gonna miss the first period if we don't leave now."

"Okay! I'll talk to Steve." I sighed as we walked into school the same morning. "You know I don't want to, but... For Barb, I will." Nancy had been pestering me for the past two hours about me going to talk to Steve, so, I have my free period I'll go to talk to him.

"Okay, good." Nancy approved. "Now go talk to Steve, I'll be in the library."

After finding Steve and dragging him down the alleyway, he tucked his hands in his pocket, looking at me curiously. I was done explaining everything that happened. "So, wait a sec. I don't understand. Nancy went back to my house?"

"To look for Barb," I explained.

"Yeah, okay, but why didn't you just talk to me?" Steve asked. "That's crazy."

"I don't know, she was... Scared?" I tried to come up with an excuse for Nancy's behaviour. "She didn't tell me until yesterday."

"You seriously think that Nancy saw some guy in a mask just hanging out in my yard?" Steve questioned, frowning.

"She doesn't think it was a mask—and neither do I." I frowned, remembering the photo that was in my bag.

"But he had no face?" Steve repeated.

"I don't know!" I softly exclaimed. "I wasn't there. We just both have a really terrible feeling about this."

"Oh, this is bad." Steve groaned. "This is really bad."

"What?"

"The cops..." Steve continued. "They're gonna wanna talk to all of us now. Tommy, Carol, Nancy, anyone who was at that party."

"Steve, if you're implying that you're gonna get in trouble, because so am I." I pointed to myself. "My Dad will be the one interrogating me. But I'm willing to sacrifice being in trouble because my friend is being put on the line here."

"You don't understand, my Dad's a grade A-asshole," Steve tells me.

"My Dad's a grade A-asshole too," I fired back, crossing my arms, not liking Steve's behaviour. "I mean, you've met the guy, he's a complete jerk! The point is, I'm still going to risk my reupatation for my friend."

"Okay, just..." Steve sighed. "When you talk to the cops, just... Don't mention the beers. It's just gonna get us both in trouble, and Barbara's got nothing to do with it, okay?"
