Chapter Thirteen

"Maybe you should just turn the car around, it's clear she doesn't want to talk to me," I tell Steve as we wait outside her house after two days of not talking to Nancy Wheeler. "And she made it quite obvious that we're not best friends so—"

"Stop it, Jun. You guys are best friends." Steve protested. "I have never seen your guys bond in any other friendship, you can't let it end like this. You're better with her, Jun, and you know it."

"You think so?" I asked, turning to him and giving him a small smile.

"Yeah, I know so."

Yesterday, I was contemplating on asking for forgiveness or not, so Steve's here with me today making sure I do it. I had brought her chocolates, her favourtie ones. I've never had a big fight with Nancy, and I'm not sure if I'm doing this right or not by giving her them.

I leaned in and pecked his lips. "Thank you, Steve. I know I can always count on you if I ave any issues." I poked his nose with my finger and he flinched away. I laughed at that and did it multiple times and each time I did it, he pressed himself further into his seat.

"Jun, stop stalling!" Steve scowled at me and I pouted. "We didn't prepare the speech for nothing."

"We did it to spend time with each other." I protest, pulling away from him. "Okay. Fine. I'm going now. Jeez." I jiggled my leg a bit before getting out of the car and Steve follows, but he stays in the car.

"You got this!" Steve called out, blowing me a kiss and I gave him a middle finger and then formed half a heart with my hand to show him I'm kidding. I walked down the pathway of the Wheeler's, biting the inside of my cheek.

"You're my best friend, I'm sorry," I muttered over the words, it was doing my head in. "Wait, what am I sorry for? I'm not the one who—"

"Juno! Are those for Mr and Mrs Wheeler?" I turned around and saw Dustin Henderson walking over to me.

"No." I looked down at the chocolates.

"Good." Dustin snatches them away from me.

"Hey. What the hell, kid?" I called out as he walked away from me and towards Steve's car.

"Nancy isn't home," Dustin informs, and I throw my hands up as I follow him.

"Where is she?" I asked.

"Doesn't matter," Dustin responded. "We have bigger problems than your friendship life." He looked at Steve. "Do you still have that bat?"

"What bat?" Steve asked.

"The one with the nails?" Dustin gave him a look.

"Why?"

"I'll explain on the way." Dustin had his hand on the front door and I scowled at him.

"Hey, no! Kids in the back." I pointed at the back and he gave me a dirty look before climbing into the back seat I ran over to the car, getting in at the same time as Steve.

Later on in the car, Dustin was explaining that he found a little slug in his backyard as he sat in the middle while Steve drove and I sit in the passenger seat trying to listen to this kid's story. It took him so long that it was a dark time and he's going to make us see it in his basement.

"Wait, so how big was it?" Steve asked.

"So first it was like that," Dustin put his fingers together only a little bit, then expands them. "Now it's like that."

"I swear to God man, if this is some lizard, okay?" Steve glared.

"It's not a lizard." Dustin groaned.

"How do you know?" I questioned Dustin, turning around to face him.

"How do I know if it's not a lizard?" Dustin asked.

"Yeah, how do you know it's not just a lizard?" Steve fires back.

"Because his face opened up and he ate my cat." Dustin quickly rushed out and my mouth dropped wide.

"He ate your cat?" I whispered, turning to the front. Steve grabs my hand for comfort as he drives to Dustin's.

Steve opens his trunk once we had gotten to Dustin's house and pulled out his bat. Dustin leads us to his basement outside, it was closed shut. Holding a flashlight, Steve eyes it carefully.

"I don't hear shit," Steve claims, and to be honest, neither do I. I stand there with my arms crossed over my chest.

"He's in there." Dustin insisted.

Steve throws a glance at Dustin before he taps the bat on the doors. There was no movement from the other side. He takes a bigger swing, and once again, no noise. Steve shines his flashlight in Dustin's face. "All right, listen, kid. I swear, if this is some sort of Halloween prank, you're dead."

"It's not." Dustin groaned.

"All right?" Steve narrowed his eyes.

"It's not a prank." He whined. "Get it out of my face."

"You got a key for this thing?" Steve asked, nodding towards the basement. Dustin had pulled out the key and unlocks it. Steve opens it, a stairwell leading into the darkness. He takes the flashlight from Dustin who stands behind him along with me. "Let me see that." We see no sign of this so-called Dart.

"He must be further down there." Dustin pointed out. "I'll stay up here in case he tries to escape."

"And I'll stay up here to protect Dustin." I smiled and Steve gives both of us a 'what the fuck' look. He shakes his head and sighs before walking down there. Steve takes the bat and the flashlight down with him, I stand there with a hand on my hip.

"So are you and Steve...?" Dustin raised an eyebrow.

I blushed a little, looking away from him. "It's complicated."

"Uh-huh, it's a simple question, are you and Steve dating?" Dustin asked. I shrugged. "What the hell does that mean, Juno?"

"It means—" I shrug again, biting my lower lip to keep myself from laughing. Suddenly, Steve pops back up scaring the shit out of Dustin and I, his flashlight pointing towards us.

"Get down here," Steve tells us seriously.

Dustin and I give each other a look before heading down the basement stairs. Once we got there, Steve was holding shredded skin on the bat, making me scrunch up my face in disgust.

"Oh, shit," Dustin spoke. My eyes followed the flashlight beam where Steve pointed. "Oh, shit!" We walked over towards the hole that Dart had made in the walls of the basement. It was a concrete block wall too. "No way. No way."
