Chapter Ten
"I don't understand why we are moving out in the middle of the woods, Dad. I know this is Grandad's cabin and all but, you're making me feel like more further away from society than out here." I told him as we had done a five-minute hike in the winter snow in 1983, almost a year after everything had gone down.
"It's all for a good reason," Dad tells me as we walked around the cold cabin. "There's someone I want you to meet, again."
"Again?" I asked as I shivered. "Listen, I had plans, you know."
"With Steve," Dad added on, giving me a look. "You know, I'm not sure if I like Steve, or if I hate him."
"Dad," I groaned. "Steve's a good guy."
"Well, you're not dating him so I suppose I shouldn't hate him yet—"
"Seriously, would you stop that? You sound like Nance." I point at him. "And I'm not talking to you about my boy issues. That's what Nancy's for."
"Why not?" Dad asked me. "I thought we were close."
"We are close." I rolled my eyes. "But not to the point where I'm gonna tell you I like Steve."
"So, you do like him?" Dad raised an eyebrow.
I blushed furiously and stomped my feet on the ground. "Would you stop? Just open the door already I'm freezing my ass off."
"Okay," Dad rolled his eyes at my drama before knocking a few times on the door. I frowned. Why does he not just open it?
Suddenly, the door flies open. Dad pushes the door open a little bit more and I followed in after him as he closes the door behind me.
"Hey, uh, we have a guest!" Dad yelled out. I turned to see a girl with brown curly hair coming out of a bedroom. I frowned. "El, you remember Juno?"
El's face brighten some more when she recognised me and my mouth simply dropped. "How the hell—" The little girl runs towards me and wraps her arms around me. I do the same for her. I was happy she was alive, but I'm also confused about how my Dad had her.
El pulls away from me, with a smile on her face. "Hi." She greets.
"Oh, my God, hi." I greet back, looking at her tiny frame. "So this is why you've been acting suspicious all winter." I accused Dad, turning to him as he was in the kitchen.
"Yes, I'm sorry," Dad apologised. "She's been here for a few weeks now, she's going to stay with us. That's why we're moving into the cabin. I should've told you sooner, I know. Just don't—Don't yell at me."
I turned to Dad. "I'm not gonna yell."
"Okay, good," Dad side-eyes me. "Treat—Treat El like your sister, or something. She's gonna family for a while."
"Family," El repeated softly, gazing at me. "Sister."
"Sister." I nodded with her.

"It's crap, I know."
I sit in Steve's car outside Hawkins Highschool, reading over a letter that he was applying for Colleges. I'm proud of him for actually wanting to go to college because I know for a fact that I do not.
"It's not crap." I denied it, lying only a little bit. There are a few things that are questionable but other than that it's fine.
"It's not good," Steve mumbled.
"It's going to be," I assured him, lowering the papers a little and meeting with Steve's eyes. "Just... It needs some reorganizing." He sighed deeply. "Can me and Nance mark on it? Nancy's super good at essays, I'm only average."
