Chapter Thirty-Five

I'm now with Max in the dark high school, which is creeping me out. Dustin and Steve were walking behind us, while I was ahead with Max. Max takes me down the dark high school hallways.

"Okay, this is it," Max tells me and grabs the keys off me, walking over to the guidance office door. She unlocks the door, slipping inside along with me, Dustin, and Steve. With a torch, she walked over to a file cabinet. She looks through the names in the folders.

"It's like a mini-Watergate or something," Dustin spoke which made no sense to me. "Hawkinsgate."

"Didn't those guys get caught?" Steve asked.

"Holy shit," Max spoke and we all turned to her.

"You found it?" Steve questioned her.

"Yeah, and not just Chrissy's files," Max informed us. "Fred was seeing Ms Kelley too." Max takes out both of their files and she sits at a desk. We do this unspoken. Dustin, Steve, and I lean over Max, watching her take out Chrissy and puts it on the table.

Notes on a page list read: terrible night mares, difficult sleeping and headaches. "Can I see Fred's files?" Max requested.

"Yeah," Steve responded, giving her Fred's file. Max opens it and turns to the notes section. I read nosebleeds listed on Fred's files. There were also constant nightmares.

"Max? What is it?" Dustin asked, noticing she was a little spaced out, and a realisation look on her face. She looked almost terrified. "Max? Max?"

I frowned when she doesn't respond.  "Okay... Something's not right with her." I pointed it out and she looked completely out of it. Like she was in a trance. "Max? Max." I kept shaking her shoulder and then suddenly she looked up at us, her eyes widening. "Hey, hey, it's okay. It's okay."

Max shakes her head. "No. It's not."

"It was here. Right here." Max pointed her flashlight at the wall. She explained to us that she saw a grandfather clock.

"A grandfather clock?" Nancy asked. Nancy and Robin had arrived just in time when Max had walked us down the hall to show us the grandfather clock she was raving about.

Max nods. "It was so real. And then, when I got closer, suddenly I just... I woke up."

"It was like she was in a trance or something," Dustin explained and I nodded in agreement. "Exactly what Eddie said happened to Chrissy."

Max turns to face us. "That's not even the bad part." In Miss Kelley's office, we all gathered around Ms Kelley's table. "Fred and Chrissy, they both came to Miss Kelley for help. Uh, they both were having headaches, bad headaches that wouldn't go away. And then... Then nightmares. Trouble sleeping. They'd wake up in cold sweat. Then they started seeing things. Bad things. From their pasts. These visions, they just... they kept on getting worse and worse, until eventually... everything ended."

"Vecna's curse," Robin spoke.

"Chrissy's headaches started a week ago," Max explained. "Fred, six days ago. I've been having them for five days. I don't know how long I have. All I know is that." She tears up a little bit and I couldn't help but tear up a bit too. Max can't die. I won't let that happen. "For Fred and Chrissy, they both died less than 24 hours after their first vision. And I just saw that goddamn grandfather clock, so..." She breaths out shakily. "Looks like I'm gonna die tomorrow."

Suddenly, a distant clang made us all turn our heads in the direction. My heart was jumping out of its skin and I grabbed onto the first thing that was close by me, and it was Steve.
