Chapter Three

I sat on my bed trying to put the picture together that had been torn up. I finished the basketball game with Nancy, Nicole, Steve, Carol, and Tommy. I didn't mind basketball but I knew Nancy hated it. But I couldn't focus on the game as I kept thinking about the picture and I couldn't wait to go home and put the pieces together.

I was wrapping the picture up in tape, and it all came together. Barb was sitting by the poolside and was really scared me about this picture is that there was something in the corner lurking over Barb. It sent shivers up my spine and I grabbed the phone to call Nancy.

I dialled her number, a phone that stood at the side of my bedroom table and called her. She picked up almost instantly. "Nancy."

"Juno?" She responded.

"I can't stop thinking about Barb," I admitted. "And I have a really bad feeling something happened to her and then I took some pictures that had been shredded up by Steve and Carol, there was a pic of Barb and I just—How soon can you come over?"

"Like, ten minutes?" Nancy questioned herself. "Juno, is everything okay?"

"No! No! Nothing about this is okay!" I exclaimed, running a hand through my hair as I stared at myself in my mirror. "Just get over here ASAP, please."

"Okay, okay!" Nancy rushed out. "Don't do anything rational, please. For the sake of my mental health—"

"Nancy, I'm not having a mental breakdown, jeez," I stress. "Please come help me figure out what the hell this thing is."

"Wait, thing? What thing, Juno—"

"I'll see you soon!" I hung up on her, breathing heavily. I walked back over to the picture and sat on my bed crisscrossed, looking down at the paper.

I walked out of my room and towards the kitchen, making myself a snack. I glanced over at the time, it was reaching around 6.00 PM and Dad still isn't back yet. I wonder what he could be doing right at this moment.

As I wait on the couch, eating my cheese toastie, Nancy comes through the door. "Is everything okay, Juno?"

"No, I don't think so," I replied, getting up and dragging her towards my room. "Look at this. What does this thing look like to you?"

Nancy takes the photo carefully from me and glanced down. "Um. Barb sitting at the pool?"

"No, look closer," I tell her eagerly.

"Oh, what is that?" Nancy asked. "Did I mention I went searching behind Steve's house today? Barb's car was there, where we had left it. Barb wasn't there. And then, there was something in the woods that spooked me. I don't know... It kind of looked like that."

"Nancy, why didn't you tell me?" I stressed, placing my hands on my face. "I wouldn't have left you on your own to do that."

"I know, I'm sorry, I was just really worried." Nancy instantly apologised to me. "From now on, we search for Barb, okay? Like, seriously."

"Okay, let's start thinking." I passed around my bedroom, biting on my lower lip trying to figure out something. Anything. "Oh! Jonathan. He was there last night, remember?"

"Yeah?" Nancy asked, turning to me. "What about him?"

"Maybe he knows where Barb went!" I grinned a little. "We just need to see him tomorrow, that's all. Ask him a few questions."

"I don't know... What he did to you earlier today, I..." Nancy glanced down to the ground, shuffling her feet.

"Nance, it's okay. I'm okay. Besides, Steve taught him a lesson." I shrugged, sitting down on my bed and crossing my legs. "I'll be okay around him."
