2 YEARS EARLIER

Through the slats in the door I can just make out the shape of three figures, three inquisitors, marching closer. Their steps are uniformed, moving in sync with one another. I inhale once, struggling to contain my panicked breathing. They were going to find me. They were going to kill me. My efforts from the past two years were wasted.

A small hand grips mine and I look down to see the small Togruta child I had met a few weeks ago. Fear is plastered across his young face and his grip on my hand tightens. I squeeze it lightly. He gazes into my eyes, searching for a sign of the hope that I had once embodied, back when I was a protector of peace. Now all that is there is a broken promise to the galaxy. I will fix this, I think but do not voice. I force a small smile onto my face, trying to reassure him. No child should have to live in fear.

"Everything is going to be okay little one. When the people out there leave we'll find your mom and she can take you somewhere safer." He doesn't say anything.

Dashune's parents had always known that he was special, that he had abilities the other Togruta children didn't have. They had planned to raise him for a couple of years and then let the Jedi take him to train him in the Temple. They had made these plans before the rise of the Empire, before Order 66. When they had heard the news of the destruction of the Jedi, they had gone into hiding, doing everything they could to prevent the Inquisitors from finding him but now it looks as though I have lead them right to him.

My arrival on their planet was entirely accidental. My ship had crash landed here and they had welcomed me with open arms, grateful to finally meet someone who understood what it was like to grow up with the force. I stayed for many months and even when my ship had been fully repaired I chose to continue with my life here. I chose to train Dashune, to help him control his power. It felt strange to be a mentor to someone, something that I didn't have time to do before Order 66. I used to try and imagine a life that could have been, a life where I had gotten to train a padawan and rise into the ranks of Jedi Mastery but then I realized that there was no point in even thinking about what should have been my future. The dark shadows of the Empire are all there is to see now. This is all there is to my future.

I have been careless for too long and now they have found me.

I step back from the door, pushing Dashune behind me as the Inquisitors make their way closer to our hiding place. The house we are occupying is empty, except for a few storage crates. I kneel down in front of Dashune, "I need you to do something for me. Do you think that you can?"

"Anything." His big, round eyes gaze up at me. I lift my hand to wipe away a few stray tears running down his cheeks.

"Can you go and hide in one of those crates back there? I need to do something important." He looks as though he wants to say something but a voice on the other side of the door stops him.

"Open up! We know you're in there." I watch Dashune as he runs towards a storage crate. He climbs into it, pulling the lid down after him. Once he is completely hidden from view, I open the door. I step back as two inquisitors enter the house.
