Warning: Violence and death

I scoop up a spoonful of the soggy cereal, letting it drop back into the bowl, not really taking note of my actions. My mind is whirling with constant thoughts and anxieties, brought on by my lack of sleep last night.
After Vader and I parted ways, following our strangely comforting conversation, I laid in my bed, trying to keep the memories at bay and thinking about his apology. Why had he apologized? And why had I tried to comfort him. I try to tell myself that I was convincing myself that Rex will be okay, but perhaps not.
This entire mission was beginning to get confusing. The lines between the good and the bad were blurring and, sometimes when I was talking to Vader or Fives, I began to forget what I was fighting for.
I bring myself back to the present and slam my head down onto the breakfast bar in the communal dining hall. Why can't this be as simple as it was a couple of weeks ago? When I was fighting my way through the grand inquisitor trials; when the only thing on my mind was destroying the Empire.
"(y/ n)! There you are. I've been looking for you everywhere." I lift my head up to see Fives standing directly in front of me. I scrub my hand over my face. "Hey, are you okay?"
"I'm just tired." I tell him, waving away his concern. "What's the plan for today, anyway? Are we going to find Rex ourselves or does one of the troopers have a lead?" Restless energy was running through my bloodstream. I desperately wanted to do anything to help, if anything just to clear my head from thoughts of my mission.
A look of frustration covers Fives' face. "The plan is we're supposed to sit around here and wait."
"What? Has Vader gone on his own?"
"Nope," He says popping the p. "He told me this morning that it would be best if we focus on solving the archive problem first."
"But that makes no sense!" I say, outraged by Vader's sudden change in plans. He made out saving Rex was our priority and now he's acting like he couldn't care less what happens to him. What changed?
"Exactly," Fives elongates the word. "That's what I thought. Well, that was until I heard he had a holo-call with the Emperor earlier this morning."
"What do you mean?"
"You don't know? The Emperor has a way of manipulating him into doing his bidding and he's too loyal to see that. It means he blindly agrees to orders and then takes it out on the people around him if he doesn't like what he's been told to do."
"Well, someone has remind him of his kidnapped friend." I push my chair out and stand but before I can move out of the room, Fives grabs hold of my arm, lightly stopping me. He looks so tired.
"Just be careful, okay?" I nod and head to the only place Vader can be.

I walk into the old Jedi Archives, with an entire speech planned out in my head on the importance of prioritising the rescue of Rex, but I am stopped abruptly by the sound of intense voices.
