I roll over to check the clock. "7:30" The red digits scream. I've been awake all night. Now that I have my own space, I have to get used to it. It's hard being in a space with so much quiet when you're used to the noise around the hospital. Even at 3 am, you would hear the squeak of wheels from the janitors even though they were far away. My first day at Mystic Falls High is today and Bonnie's not even gonna be there.

I push the heavy comforter off of myself and grab all my shower stuff before walking into the bathroom. I pull off my bonnet and look in the mirror to take in what I look like. I haven't been in front of a mirror in months. My thick and curly hair manages to somewhat fall over my shoulders and my brown eyes stare back at me. My arms are covered with scars and my pajama pants fall off of my waist a bit. The band of my boy shorts covers the long scar I have across my stomach and I'm thankful. My medium brown skin is dull but moisturized, the glare reflecting in certain spots over my torso.

I lean onto the counter and take a few deep breaths before grabbing a glass of water and taking my morning medications. I sigh before turning on the shower and pulling off my pj's. I shower briefly, brushing my teeth and taking time to wash off last night's exhaustion. I run the water as hot as I can handle and stand under the faucet until I'm clean. I dry off quickly and put on lotion, making sure to apply bio-oil to my scars before heading back into my room.

I pull on a black long-sleeved shirt and baggy blue jeans and grab my olive green sweatshirt before dealing with my hair. Section by section, I pull my hair into a low bun and tuck the final pieces before doing my edges. I clean up and put on some earrings and pull my silver chain from under my shirt. I adjust my nose ring and slip on my thumb ring before grabbing my black high-top converse and heading downstairs.

"Morning KJ," Jenna says, turning to put pancakes on a plate. "Have some breakfast. I made pancakes but we have cereal in the cabinet by the fridge. Bowls are in the cabinet next to it and utensils are in the island's top drawer."  I nod and put my bag on the bench by the door before pulling on my sweatshirt. I look at the cereals and decide on apple jacks before making myself a bowl. "How'd you sleep?" I slide into the island seat and reply, "Okay. The bed was really comfortable." Jenna nods and answers, "Good I'm glad. I just want you to know that whatever you need I'm here. Elena too. Jeremy's-"

"Right here and ready to eat." Jeremy comes into the kitchen and slips a few pancakes onto a plate. I smile small and watch as he pours syrup and grabs a fork in a fluid motion. I continue eating my cereal as he slides into the seat next to me. I can feel his eyes on me but I focus on the miniature floating circles in my almond milk. Elena bustles into the kitchen and grabs an apple from the fruit bowl in the middle of the island.

"I can walk you to the main office, KJ. My lockers in that direction." Jeremy offers as I stand on the field facing the front doors. I nod and reply, "Okay." before following him into the building. He opens the door and holds it for me as I step across the doorway. We pass a group of guys tossing a football down the hall. There's a tall blonde guy with kind eyes that pass over me and look at Elena. Something went on there. I think. She's visible behind Jeremy and me but she's sitting at a park bench talking to a guy. He introduced himself as Stefan Salvatore.

The guy he passes the football to is wearing a short-sleeved maroon t-shirt and the ball flies a little over his head. I open my arms and catch it, stopping in the middle of the hall. As he turns to me, he jokes, "What are you, a dude with boobs?" I roll my eyes and reply, "And what are you? A dick with a mouth?" before throwing the ball over him again to the blonde guy. Blonde guy laughs and Jeremy adds, "KJ just got here Tyler. You're already making a bad impression." He shrugs and says, "What's it matter to you, Gilbert? You don't have friends anyway so now she'll have to stick by your side."

Before I can say anything, the blonde guy comes over and comments, "It's not even worth it. Tyler can be a real jerk sometimes." I nod and reply, "Some friend he is." Blonde guy shrugs and replies, "I feel like he can change." I shake my head and answer, "Sometimes, guys like that don't change." He nods and hmphs before saying, "I'm Matt." I look up and reply, "KJ. Bonnie's little cousin." He smiles and says, "Oh! She showed us a picture of you guys. You're from Boston, right?" I smile and nod. Jeremy clears his throat. I glance back at him before turning back to Matt but he's already headed down the hall. I frown and turn back to Jeremy. He nudges his head in the direction of the office and asks, "You ready?" I adjust the strap on my shoulder and follow him.

The bell rings dismissing my English class and I stick my pen into my bun and slip my notebook into my bag. A blonde girl with killer heels and a cute dress makes her way over to me. "Hi, you must be KJ, Bonnie's little cousin. I'm Caroline, Elena's other best friend. How are you?" From the way she's looking at me, I can tell she doesn't really care about what I have to say. I zip my messenger bag shut and pull it over my head, walking down the aisle.

"I've been better. Today hasn't been so bad other than Tyler Lockwood this morning." Caroline flips her hair and follows me down the aisle, but continues into the hall. I wave to Mr. Farth before following her into the hall. "Ignore Tyler, I promise you no good ever comes from him. And I'm glad you're fitting in." I press my lips together and cut in, "I wouldn't say that. I just got here today." Caroline looks up from her phone and fakes interest. "Mhm. Everyone's first day is bad but I'm sure you're doing amazing. Elena told me to tell you that she'd be at lunch with Stefan; they'd be at the front table if you wanted to sit with them."

"Thanks," I respond drily before walking around her. I make my way down the hall to my locker, putting in my combination. I yank the metal tab to open the door up and it gets stuck. I sigh and bang the locker door a few times with my knuckle before trying again. It opens and I put my notebooks and binder into my locker. I can hear footsteps approaching but since they're slow and heavy, I assume it's a guy. A strong hand comes over mine and pulls my locker door open for me.

"What the hell-" I cut off my sentence when I make eye contact with someone that has shockingly blue eyes. He has a perfect jawline and the black tousled hair and leather jacket of someone I shouldn't want to know more about but I do. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be forward. I'm Damon. Damon Salvatore." I nod and reply, "I'm KJ. KJ Womack."
