4-year old Winter strode down the palace corridors hand-in-hand with her new nanny. She was taking her back to the queen's chambers. Of course, the nanny was not allowed to enter, so her father, Evret, met them by the entrance.
Evret nodded at the nanny and dismissed her. He kneeled to his daughter's height and smiled.
"Did you have fun today?"
He took her hand and they made their way to the bedroom. "It was okay"
"What's wrong sweetheart?"
After a long pause, in which they entered the room, the princess finally spoke."Where's Selene?"
Before Evret could even think of an answer, Levana stood up from her oversized armchair. She walked up to them in extreme brashness and frowned. She looked down to Winter and only gave her the truth.
"Winter, honey. Selene is gone. You might as well meet new friends or stick with the Garrison child because you will never see Selene again."
Her not at all sad tone made Winter and Evret wonder. Selene had been her niece after all. But the way Levana said it, there was a hint of happiness in it.
Winter looked down and bit the inside of her cheek. She shouldn't have asked. All the princess wanted was to see her best friend once more.
Evret's eyes narrowed. Levana only grinned and hugged him. "Oh Evret. When will she learn?"
That was enough for him to consider staying out of her chambers for at least a day. If she would only let him.
"Winter, do you want to play with Jacin? He's in the kitchen eating leftover cake from yeasterday's party."
At this, Winter's mood lightened and she nodded. Evret could see Levana glaring at them as they walked off, but he was too focused on getting out of the room to care.
When they arrived at the kitchen, surely, Jacin was there. The boy smiled when he saw Winter. She sat next to him and they started talking about whatever kids talk about nowadays.
"Jacin, Mother says Selene is gone" Winter whispered. She didn't want anyone overhearing that she was still thinking about Selene.
Jacin stopped eating and looked at the princess. He already knew how life didn't last forever. But he didn't want to tell Winter. Instead, he simply nodded. Winter sighed.
"Dont worry. I'm pretty sure Selene is somewhere better than here, anyway"
"So you think we could see her again?"
"I dont think so, Winter"
