Taking a deep breathe as I slowed down the car, right outside the entrance of the hotel where my brother would be staying over the weekend, I looked out the window to see if he was outside. I was nervous. Not because of the fact that my bigger brother, the one who had been trying to protect me during my teenage years from boys that clearly weren't good for me, would meet Daniel for the first time. But more because I was nervous about me meeting my brother.
I hadn't really seen Marcus for over a year now, with him living his own life right outside London, and me having a hectic schedule that barely gave me a moment to breathe, at least not while I still lived here. But knowing very well that the last time I saw him, he had brought my our mother into one of the conversations, and my reaction had been to immediately put up those walls, feeling like a kid holding her hands over her ears as I didn't want to hear what he wanted to say.
Marcus didn't have a great relationship with our mother as well, but I could see that he was starting to miss having at least on of our parents in our lives, especially as the years passed by without our father's presence anymore. But I wasn't ready to be honest, I wasn't brave enough to face her and try to build up some kind of a parenting relationship with her. I was still feeling hurt after everything she did towards us, how she one day decided to leave without a fight when our father had asked her to, giving neither of us a sign of wanting to change herself for her own kids.
But this weekend would be a new start, for me and my brother to bond again and to feel like kids going to Silverstone and see the sport we both grew up loving. Because even though I stopped watching the races after our father died, I knew Marcus never stopped. And that also meant that I knew that he would be like a kid on Christmas this weekend, walking by all the drivers and being able to stand in the garage to see the whole action upfront.
Writing him a quick text to alert him that I was outside, I tried to remember everything Daniel had told me this morning before he left for the track together with Blake and Michael. Since this was McLaren's home race, and Lando coming from the UK as well, they had a hectic schedule throughout the weekend, meaning that I had to be the one showing Marcus around and trying to remember whenever every single thing took place.
Blake had been an angel emailing me Daniel's schedule, and he was also being quite clear that me and Marcus could join him if I felt insecure about where to be. It was after all my third time being at the race track, and I was already feeling comfortable about it, but this time I knew that the cameras would eat me alive once I would enter the track as me and Daniel had now gone official about our relationship. And, if I could have Blake near me, who were way more used to all of this than I was at the moment, I would keep his number close on my phone in case of an emergency.
A swift movement outside my window brought me back to reality as I saw a guy in McLaren merch walking around as he looked quite confused, giving me a huge laugh as I hadn't told him that I was renting a car this weekend and I never told him which one it was. But I couldn't help but laugh as well over the fact that my brother had taken his time to buy some McLaren merch to show his support to his little sister's boyfriend, noticing the big 3 on the back of his t-shirt.
Pulling down the window, I whistled at him, the exact sound I had learnt from him back in the days when we were kids on a holiday and I knew that it would get his attention. With a quick twirl on his heel, he looked in the way where the sound came from, and when he looked inside the car I gave him a quick wave as I smiled. Warmth filling my body as I saw the smile of his growing on his lips when he noticed me, and with a quick pull on the door he jumped inside.
"LIzzie!" He laughed lightly before giving me a hug. "I thought for a second that you had ghosted me, but then I remembered that we share the same blood, and you would probably never do that to your old brother."
