You lay on the bed and stare at the ceiling, the silence in the hospital room suddenly intimidating. You decided to put your boy band playlist on pause as you try to focus on your breathing, since listening to NSYNC on blast makes your body move on its own when it should be preparing for the little one to come out.
It should be in a few hours, the nurse says, affirming that the cramps and pain you're currently feeling are perfectly normal. She's still timing your contractions, and despite the discomfort, you're glad you're as paranoid and anxious as you are that you elected to head to the hospital once you felt the frequency and intensity increase.
You hailed a cab and walked in, adamant that your baby is coming out soon, and that it was better to come early than late when you're still able to actually walk without needing assistance.
"You're alone? Where's your partner?" The attending physician asked, and too tired to explain the whole thing, you said he's not around and had your OB check on you.
"Are you alone? Where's your partner?" The nurse this time asks, and you're stable enough to detail your experience.
"My family's coming from Geochang. They'll be here soon," you tell her.
Namjoon is in the Blue House for an important meeting while Ma-ri is in Ilsan to care for her ailing mother. Byeol got called for an emergency surgery and, well, that's it. Your friends are currently in the trial of your firm's biggest case yet, and you can't afford any of them to be distracted, even Yoongi.
Labor started two days ago and your doctor said it was normal; neither of you expected that meant that the little one inside you is excited to come out, a few days earlier than she's due. It's why no one's around for you, right now at least, but you know once they're able, they'll be rushing to you in an instant, celebrating as you hold your daughter in your arms.
You mindlessly pick up your phone that rings, and you freeze at the sound of Yoongi on the other end, asking how you are.
"You said labor started already, just wanted to know if you're okay," he says.
The grunt you exhale tells him you aren't, and he starts demanding that you tell him what you're feeling right now.
"Excited since she's coming out soon," you admit, "and if any one of you leaves the court, I will be so angry and quit the firm."
He knows these aren't empty words, and while he doesn't appreciate the threat, he knows you didn't work so hard on that case just for the best lawyers you assigned on it to not be at their best because of you. This is a big one, and you had strict orders to the team that they'll have their full attention on it, even if somewhere in Seoul, you'll be exerting all your effort to push a human being out of your body and into the world.
"I mean it, Min. Stay there. I'm okay."
He mumbles something then drops the call, only to call back 2 minutes later to say that neither one of your best friends are picking up their phones, which means they're not with you, which means you're alone.
"Super important work stuff that I'd be upset at them for missing for me," you say. "And my Mom's on her way. And the nurse here is so lovely, I don't feel so alone any— fucking shit," you yell the last bit.
"Not long now, Ms. Kim," Yoongi hears the nurse, faint but audible, as she's probably checking how dilated your cervix is.
"Fucking shit, ___. You can't be going through this on your own," he panics.
"Min, I swear to g– shit, shit, shit," you continue to grunt.
He hears you on the other end until he doesn't, as the nurse picks up the phone to tell him that your contractions are getting stronger and you'd need to focus. He hangs up then looks to Jin and Jimin who had come from the washroom, all three men about to head back inside after a short break.
