Jungkook fidgets with his phone, leg shaking as he sits on one of the benches as he waits for you. It's 15 minutes past the time you asked to meet but you're still not here. He knows you're going to show up, but he still can't help the nervousness he feels.
This is where you were supposed to spend last Saturday, after all, and he'd been here half an hour ago just to make sure that whatever happened last time, he'd be here early enough to keep you from leaving in case it happened again.
His phone rings and he's appeased when you say that you're not standing him up and that you're actually walking towards the indoor park already. He sighs in relief and you chuckle, saying you'll be there soon before hanging up.
Yesterday felt surreal for Jungkook. He was looking forward to last Saturday when all three of you were supposed to have that date you agreed on, but you ran out the store earlier that day and didn't look back.
The entire week of unanswered calls and unopened text messages felt like deja vu. He was distraught, that's for sure, and it felt like deja vu to his friends and colleagues, too. He had no idea what had happened, and other than your mother saying then that something had come up, he didn't know anything else. None of your friends from work seemed to know, either.
He took full-day shifts every single day at work just to wait for you to drop by, but you never did. It's like he felt your absence much more the past week than he did the 2 years he was away, and he felt his heart breaking for every day that he didn't hear from you.
But like always, he waited around. His phone was stuck to him like glue in case you decided to call. He'd send a message each day just so you knew he was thinking about you but he never got a text back. So when he saw you standing in front of the counter with an unsure look on your face yesterday, it felt like a dream.
You were right on time, though, because one more day and he didn't think he would've managed. He tried to act tough but he's long realized that when it comes to you, that's the hardest thing for him to be.
He's weak for you when you're being your decisive, uncompromising self, but something about you being coy and flustered makes his heart flip and his head dizzy. It's as if you were fumbling, afraid he'd turn you down, even if he thinks it's silly you'd even doubt him.
When you'd said something about being his girlfriend, his brain short-circuited. It's what he always hoped you'd be but never really pushed for, always just content with what you could offer.
He knows your straightforward nature would tell him off if you don't want him around - you did that, he reminds himself - but that you'd also tell him if you finally want more. It felt like you were both skirting around the idea for all the months since he got back, and though confusing at times, Jungkook lives for every single moment he has with you.
It's like you wanted to keep him at a distance but you let him in your and Heejin's world enough to let him know that unlike before, you're a little more flexible this time. That this time, you're willing to try.
Jimin had said you're one to always take her time and Jungkook isn't surprised. That just means you want to always be sure, and when you are, that only means you're in it for the long-run. And just the thought that you're actually taking your time now - from this lunch to hopefully a date and then more - lets him know that you're finally seeing him in your vision board, that he's finally becoming part of your plan.
He doesn't notice the silly smile painted on his face until he hears your voice.
"You better have been thinking of me when you were smiling or else I'd be really upset if you weren't," you tease.
