"WOODCREST HIGH" I read. "Whoa.....high school seems grand. Gosh Kay... Im nervous."
I was standing in front of the huge building, my knees turning into jelly. It was my first day of high school. I had left middle school as a very upset girl. I had fallen in love. Stupid, but yeah. And went and had my heart broken. But I had decided that it was time to turn a new leaf. New place, new memories. I had to admit, I was kind of excited.
"I know Rach, me too. I can't even remember where our first class is."
I was panicking. Rachel is my best friend. We've been together since 1st grade. We did almost everything together. She was my height, with flaming red hair. We jokingly called her Meli, short for Melissandre, the red headed witch from Game Of Thrones, just to annoy her. But Rach was no way like the witch. She was a sweet, lively girl.
"Oh please Kay, chuck the drama. We are in this together girl. Im there for you. Why are you even wondering? And FYI, our first class is English with Professor Shirley."
That was my other best friend Emma. She had pretty blonde and wavy hair. Her sharp features had often made her a heart-throb for boys. She was beautiful and sweet. She could work wonders with her paintbrush. Her sense of humour could lighten up your day. She was a sensible and straightforward person. I had never really talked to her, until that one day where she saved my sorry ass from our principal. Since then we were best friends.
"Come on Kaylen! We don't want to get late on the first day of high school!"
Em and Rachel's voice brought me out of my stupor. Together, the three of us walked into the great hallways and towards our lockers. After haphazardly stuffing my things into my locker, we all ran into the hallway searching for our English class.
After three missed turns, two complete circles and once banging into a wall, we three finally reached our class. Fortunately with 5 minutes to spare. Gosh, it would take us a while to get used to this school.
"Come on girls... the last desks!"
We scrambled and took 3 of the last remaining four desks in the back row. Rach was sitting in between me and Emma. I was unloading my stuff when Professor Shirley walked in. Mrs. Shirley was a young woman in her 30's with flaming red hair neatly tied in a bun. She was pretty with kind, but sharp features. She sat down with a flourish. I quietly poked Rach.
"Seems like you have got a twin." I smirked and she glared at me while Emma snickered.
"Ahem. Good morning children. I am Mrs Shirley and I will be your English teacher for the next few torturous years"
A cynical murmur travelled through the class.
"I am just joking kiddos. English this year will be a very- now who is this young late comer?"
I looked up to see the new boy, and to say my breath was sucked in is an understatement. He was tall and lanky, not at all athletic. He would never pass for a jock or a popular guy in school. He wasn't exactly the handsome or hot types, but he had an aura of sweetness and gentleness around him that immediately drew my attention. His face was flushed red due to embarrassment.
"Im sorry Mrs. Shirley. I missed my bus and the next one came late. This won't happen again."
Mrs. Shirley gave him a pitiful smile and ushered him in. The only remaining desk was beside me, so that was the obvious place he came to sit. As he turned to take a seat, we accidently rubbed hands. That little sense of skin on skin made my insides tingle and I blushed so red that I could give a tomato some tough competition. Rachel saw my face and giggled at my obvious discomfort. He took his seat and brushed his black hair aside.
His hair, were so beautiful. They reminded me of waves in a calm ocean.
Small lapping ones. Whoa, whoa whoa... come one you stupid brain. Focus on the lecture and not that cute boy.
Today was the first day of junior high. I was not interested in getting a bad reputation on the first day.
With great difficulty, I concentrated on the lecture. Mrs. Shirley turned out to be an amazing teacher and managed to capture the attention of all the students in the class. However, today my concentration kept wavering to the boy sitting enraptured next to me.
I was infatuated with this boy. So much for saying that I was done with boys in this lifetime. I kept on looking at him in a vain attempt to get his attention. But then inner voice began lecturing on what a fool I was being. So I stopped.
Finally, the lecture got over. But before I could turn around and say hello, the boy was gone.
