"E, you using that mirror?" I asked the girl who was having difficulty biting a blue rock candy.
Evie shook her head and mumbled something before motioning towards her purse. I nodded to her as a thank you and took the palm-sized mirror from Evie's purse.
Throughout my years of living even knowing my purple eyes were not the most common kind on the Isle, I didn't feel special. Well, yeah, they're unique (as Evie once described) but I just felt like my eyes were just regular organs that provided me with vision. But now that my mother told me that I had eyes like my father, I felt ... special. And bubbly, too. Turns out, I have something similar to Dad, too, huh? I thought and saw my lips forming a smile in the mirror.
"Cous, why are you smiling for no reason? It gives me chills." I heard Jay questioning me in a muffled voice.
I turned away from the mirror and returned it to Evie before sending him a light kick to the knee, "That is none of your business, cousin dearest."
"You're no fun." He rolled his eyes and threw a pack of something at me before continuing to shove his face with the food provided.
I flipped the package around and saw the label saying 'Snuckers'. I struggled to open the packaging for a moment (don't tell Jay that) and the chocolate-covered peanut-caramel-nougat bar (that's what the package said) looked tempting enough to convince me to give it a try. I cautiously took a tiny bite and let me tell you, it's sweet as hell. But the chewy texture and the nutty flavor made me want to take another bite (which I did). And I finished the entire bar of sweetness a few bites later.
"Carlos, is there any water or something? I need to wash it out." I pursed my lips and looked inquiringly at Carlos.
The boy searched the beverage section and threw me a bottle of water after he found one, "Here you go."
I caught the bottle and gobbled half of it down before ruffling Carlos' hair, "Thank you, buddy."
"Can you stop doing that?" Carlos protested and started fixing his hair, "I spent hours on this."
I smirked and shook my head no and received a groan from the mini De Vil. I particularly enjoyed teasing Carlos because he's the youngest out of the five of us and his reactions were adorable. Prove me wrong, I dare you.
I continued to drink from the bottle and I almost choked when Carlos suddenly exclaimed while pointing at the car's front window, "It's a trap!"
I snapped my head to the front and saw the driver driving directly to the broken cliff. I immediately pulled them close and in a position where the damage they received would lessen. I tightened my grip on them and closed my eyes tightly while thinking of ways to save everyone. Can I use my powers? Mom once said if we used our powers on the Isle, it might backfire and the user will be heavily injured. But at least there's a small possibility it might work. Just when I was about to use my powers, I heard a brief clicking sound.
I opened my eyes and saw a golden bridge forming and we were not diving into the edge of the cliff. I grinned in relief before patting their backs, "Guys, open your eyes."
One by one, they opened their eyes and slowly moved forward to see the shining bridge. They all sighed in relief and cheered as a small celebration that we didn't die. Then Mal tapped on the driver's shoulder, "Hey, does this little button just open up the magic barrier?"
"No, this one opens the magic barrier." He held up another remote, "That one opens my garage. And this button," Then the windows slide up, separating us from the front seat.
I raised my eyebrow, impressed, "Okay, that guy's got humor." Then I noticed Carlos was still hugging himself in the corner, shaking from what happened just a moment ago.
I slapped Jay's thigh and motioned him to change seats with me. He then proceeds to move towards my previous seat after giving me a slap on the arm. I glared at him before turning to Carlos, "Hey, buddy. You okay?"
The boy looked up and I saw the corner of his eyes turning red, "Vae? I was so scared."
My heart wrenched when I heard the boy's trembling whisper and I pulled him into a side-hug, "It's okay. It's over now. You have me. All of you will be fine as long as I am here. I promise."
I placed Carlos' head on my shoulder and consoled him until he was no longer shaking. Then he sat back up and turned to me with his head hung low, "Vae, do you think I'm weak? I got scared by this situation. Do you think that's why my mom hates me?"
I frowned and flicked his forehead, "Nonsense. It's only normal when you're scared, buddy. We thought we almost died. I was scared, too."
"But you didn't look like you were scared?" He questioned, his eyes swirling with confusion.
I grinned, "That's because I learned how to accept the fear. You're still young, you have plenty of time to learn that. Besides, your mom is not the most ... mentally stable person on the Isle, no offense."
"None taken." He replied, his spirits slightly lifting.
"Yeah? Maybe she doesn't actually hate you. Maybe she's just," I shrugged, "doesn't know what love is. Almost everyone on the Isle doesn't know what that is. And when we get to Auradon, I'll ask someone to help your mom. That sounds good to you?"
He chuckled and nodded, finally raising his head up, "Sounds nice. Thank you, Vae. You're the best."
I was caught off guard when he suddenly tackled me into a hug. I blinked my eyes and gently placed a hand on his back. I smiled and stroked his back slowly like when we were little, "Anytime, buddy."
