“You’re worthless.” My father spat, hand making contact with my cheek. I held back a sob and looked down to the floor. “Look at me” he slurred. I continued looking down at the floor. “God dammit, I said look at me. Can you not hear me?” he screamed, grabbing my chin and yanking my head up. “I’m sorry” I sobbed, blinking away my tears. “Go to your room. I don’t want to see your damn face.” He spat, pushing me towards the stairs. I tripped over my own feet and landed face down on the first step. I felt the blood running down my face but I quickly got up and scrambled up the stairs before my father decided to do anything else. I ran to my room and locked the door behind me, sinking to the floor. I looked at my reflection in the mirror across the room to see what damage had been done to my face this time. There was a bright red handprint on my cheek from my father’s hand, and a gash on my eyebrow from the stairs. Another trip to the nurse tomorrow…great.

I got up and walked to my bathroom, wetting a washcloth and pressing it to my eyebrow. “One day, I’ll get out of this hell, no matter what it takes.” I told myself, walking back to my room, pulling my laptop out from under my pillow and logging onto Facebook.

Hey girl. Do you want to come over? I tried texting, you okay?

No, I’m not okay. I’m stuck in this hell with my father who beats me every day, telling me how much of a disgrace I am and how it’s my fault my mum died, I thought to myself before replying.

To: Jade Walker

I’ll try to come over. If I can’t I’ll text you. Sorry, I was busy with school work. Xx

Jade has been my best friend for 5 years but she still doesn’t know about my dad. I’m scared to tell her, because I know she’ll call the police if I do tell her. I know that’s what I should do, but I’m scared of what my father will do if I actually do it. Every time Jade sees a new bruise or a new cut I tell her I was just really clumsy or I fell down while playing football. Lately, she’s been suspicious about it. Always giving me odd looks when I make up an excuse, like she’s realizing I’m lying or something. I hate lying to her, but I don’t want her feeling sorry for me or anything. I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me.

I crept down the stairs, in hopes my father was asleep so I could go over to Jade’s. I peered into the living room, seeing him out cold, sprawled across the couch. His usual sleeping arrangement on Sunday’s. I quickly ran back upstairs, pulling on my boots and grabbing my mobile. I sent Jade a text telling her I’d be over in about five minutes, then I crept back downstairs, sneaking out the back door.

“Carter! What the hell happened to your face?” Jade asked, reaching up to touch the gash on my eyebrow. “I uh, ouch!” I winced as she prodded the gash with her finger, “I tripped and fell. Hit my face on the stairs, no big deal.” I shrugged, shying away from her touch. I looked up at her as she narrowed her eyes at me, “Why is your cheek red?” “I don’t know…it’s hot in here?” “No, it’s not. And it’s only one cheek. It looks like a handprint. Carter did someone hit you?” “No. I don’t know why it’s red…It’s probably from when I fell.” I murmured, looking down at my feet. Because stairs totally leave handprints on faces. God, I hate it when she interrogates me, I feel so bad about lying to her. The tripping and falling thing isn’t so much of a lie, but the handprint is. “I think we should put you in a protective bubble.” She laughed, sitting on her bed. “Ha, I’d still find a way to hurt myself.” “Knowing you, you probably would.” She smirked, pulling out her laptop.

“Whatcha’ doin’?” I asked, leaning over to peek at her screen after about 45 minutes of her nonstop smiling and giggling. “Messaging someone, Ms. Nosy.” “Oh, who are you messaging?” I smirked, sitting back up. “It’s not like it’s any of your business, but I’m messaging Josh.” She smiled before looking back at her laptop. “Josh? The drummer, Josh?” “Mhmm.” Josh is this cute drummer that graduated from our school last year. He and Jade were always talking to each other, but they never dated because Jade was dating a douche bag named, Brandon.  You could tell Josh was head over heels for her but she was too wrapped up with Brandon. She was hopelessly in love with him, while he was just an asshole that used her. Josh was there for Jade as soon as she broke up with Brandon after she found out he was cheating on her with multiple girls. They’ve been talking nonstop ever since Jade broke up with Brandon, I’m just waiting for the day they start dating. She says they won’t date because he’s too busy with the band he’s in. But, I think they will. He’s in a band for some new boy band that I can never remember the name of. All I know is that all the girls at my school swoon over them, but I could care less. “When are you two going to date?” “We’re not. Carter, I’ve already told you that.” “Oh, you know you two are going to date. Don’t deny it. He’s cute, you’re hot, and you two never stop flirting with each other. You two are meant to be.” I winked. “Shut up” she groaned, pushing me over.  I looked at the time and suddenly turned frantic; my father should be waking up for work any time now. “Shit! I uh, need to get home.” I said, standing up from Jade’s bed. “Why? You can stay here tonight if you’d like.” “I wish I could, but I can’t. I really need to get home. Love you!” I shouted, running out the front door. Shit, shit, shit, if my father is awake then I’m totally dead. I ran to the backdoor and slowly opened it, peering inside. Thank god! He was still passed out on the couch, snoring like no other. I quietly slipped in and ran up the stairs, carefully shutting my bedroom door behind me. Time to get ready for bed.
