*Warning: there is a little bit of pathetic smut in this chapter if you don't like that kind of stuff go ahead and skip it but like I said it's really pathetic and not very smuty*
As Maria walked home from karate with Miguel, she checked her phone. Twenty two missed calls from Eli. A pang of worry rushed through her, why would Eli call her so many times?
"Let's hurry up and get home, I can smell the tres leches from here, Miggy!" She said was false excitement, sprinting away from him and to their apartment.
Maria greeted her mother and grandmother before saying she needed rest, debate team had done a number on her. It didn't make sense to her either, but she needed to call Eli back.
She ran down the hall to her bedroom, closing the door behind her. Maria couldn't even sit down to call him back, she was so anxious. It rang twice.
"Maria?" A hoarse voice whispered.
The Ecuadorian girl threw herself on her bed in relief. "Oh my God, Eli, you scared me. What's up?" She laughed if off.
"I'm - I . . ." He couldn't speak, and Maria heard him let out a strangled sob.
"Whoa, whoa, what's wrong?" She immediately sat back up. "What happened?"
"Can you . . . can you come over?" He whispered through the speaker, tears clear in his voice.
Maria bit her lip. No, she couldn't. But she would. "Yeah, but tell me what happened?"
Before Eli could speak again, a nosy twin brother by the name of Miguel entered her bedroom. "Hey, do you -"
"Ugh, can't you see I'm on the phone, Miggy?!" She threw a pillow at him, making him jump back.
"Jesus, sorry," He walked away from the door with a confused look on his face.
"Sorry, Eli, tell me what's going on?" Maria's voice softened.
"I need you, Maria, I need to see you." Eli sobbed again. "Please."
Maria couldn't deny him anything now, even if she tried. "Yes, I'm on my way."
"Come through my window, you know where it is." Before Maria could even ask why, he hung up.
She sat there for a moment, shocked, but then she jumped to her feet, a sprinted down the hallway.
"Where are you going?" Miguel asked her from the couch.
"A friend's, it's an emergency, cover for me?" She asked from the doorway.
"Always," Miguel waved her off without looking up from his phone.
Maria thanked him and sprinted from her house. "Where are you going in such a rush?" She looked up to see her sensei walking in the opposite direction she was.
"A friend's!" She called over her shoulder as she started to run again.
Eli didn't live that far away, and Maria was becoming more athletic now with karate, so she wasn't even sweating when she arrived at his house. But she was hungry. The sun was starting to set, now, and she hadn't even had an after practice snack.
Maria crept around the house, and, thanks to karate again, she easily shimmied up the pillars on the patio and onto the roof. She knocked on his window.
Eli instantly appeared. He was wearing sweats, and his face was red and tear stained, his eyes bloodshot. As soon as he opened the window, Maria practically threw herself at Eli. She wrapped him in a tight hug and he cried into her shoulder, despite the height difference.
Maria pulled away from him, placing her hands on his shoulders. "What's wrong, Eli?"
"What isn't wrong, Maria?" He jumped away from her. She couldn't understand why he was yelling at her.
"Don't yell at me," She snapped. She did feel bad for Eli, but she was here to help, not to be yelled at.
"Look at me." He said seriously. "Look at me, and tell me what you see."
Maria didn't know what to say. She saw a disaster. It was as if she was looking in a mirror.
Eli scoffed. "Exactly! That's all anyone sees! Is my lip. I'll always be the kid with the lip. Not that smart kid, or the cool kid, or the happy kid. I'm the kid with the lip. The ugly kid. The freak."
Maria felt tears in her eyes, she couldn't see him like this. "Eli, thats not true -" She took a step closer to him, and he took one back.
"Come on, Maria!" He yelled again, crying. "Look at me! Look at me!"
"Eli, stop yelling at me!" She knew that she wasn't helping by shouting back, but he was really starting to upset her.
"Why'd you even sit with us?" He snarls, still partially yelling. "You could've made it with the rich girls!"
"Is that what this is about?" Maria scoffed. "Me?"
Eli copied her scoff and looked down. "You don't get it. You don't know what it's like."
"Eli Moskowitz, look at me right now." Maria demanded. Eli did so, and before she knew it, she was telling his pretty blue eyes everything. "Since I moved here, I've been avoiding everyone from that table. You know why? Because the girls throw my clothes in the trash! They call me names too! If they're laughing at anyone from our table, it's me, Eli! Kyler and Brucks cornered me in the hallway! That's why I started taking karate. So I could defend myself if it ever happened again! If anything, you don't know what it's like being me!"
For a moment Maria stared at Eli, then her eyes flickered to his lips. "Maria . . ." Eli whispered her name, then lunged for her, smashing their lips together in a desperate, rushed kissed.
Maria slipped her tongue into his mouth, and Eli allowed her full access. She slid her hands under his hoodie and pulled it off, leaving him topless. As they ripped their clothes off, they landed on his bed, trying at all costs to never stop the kiss.
