"Holy shit." Demetri whispered, more to himself than to Miguel.
"Ha ha!" Miguel drummed happily on the table. "Pay up!"
"Okay, just because they kissed doesn't mean they're seeing each other," Demetri defended, trying to keep his ten dollars safe and sound in his necromancer costume.
The song switched to Apple Bottom Jeans and Eli and Maria walked back to the table. The latter still clutched his mask in her hand.
"So, what was that?" Demetri asked seriously.
"Guys, we have something we want to tell you . . ." Maria clutched Eli's hand in her own, holding their intertwined fingers up.
"Ha ha! As I said before, pay up." Miguel repeats.
"Wait, what?" Eli asks, confused.
"You guys bet on us?" Maria asks in a scolding tone.
"Yep, and I won!" Miguel folded his fingers in and out in front of Demetri. "Come on, wheres my money?"
Demetri, who for once in his life didn't have anything to say, reached into his cape and pulled out a ten dollar bill that was supposed to be for an uber ride home. He'd have to walk now.
"I'm going to the bathroom, that punch is going right through me." The dark haired boy said.
"Yeah, me too." Eli followed Demetri out of the gymnasium.
"Be right back." Miguel gave his sister a quick smile before following after the other two boys.
Maria sat at the table alone for a moment or two before an unwanted voice sounded from in front of her. "Hey there pretty lady," The Asian boy by the name of Kyler said to her.
She looked up at him with a glare. Before Maria could push him away, her phone went off. As did Kyler's, and the rest of the gymnasiums. Maria watched as a video of an African American girl that was in her English class appeared. She was wearing a sodium costume and standing behind the snack table at the Halloween dance, popping cheese doodles into her mouth. She also had on a pig snout and ears attached to her face and head.
Help! The buffet table is under attack! The caption read.
Maria looked up to see Kyler laughing along with almost everyone else at the dance. "You think this is funny?" She snarled at the Asian boy.
"Yeah, baby," The way he spoke sent unpleasant chills down her spine. "Not everyone can be as hot as you."
"Don't call me that!" She barked, starting to leave.
Kyler didn't follow after her, and as Maria stood in the doorway she looked to see him following Sam LaRusso, a girl in her last period study hall, out of the opposite doors. That sleazy douchebag.
Maria stormed down the hallway towards the front doors. Not everyone can be as hot as you. His gravely voice replayed in her mind and it made her more uncomfortable every time. Maria wanted to throw up everything she'd ever eaten as she burst through the front doors. She sucked in a breath of the fresh air.
And then sprinted as fast as she could to the the little bushes lining the sidewalk. She retched and gaged and when she threw up everything in her stomach, she dry heaved.
After she finished, she wiped the back of her hand over her mouth and turned back towards the school.
"Are you okay?" She turned to see a boy staring at her.
Did she look like she was okay? "Yeah, I'm great. You know, just fertilizing the bushes."
He chuckled and took a step closer to her. Maria instinctively steps backward, away from the boy. As he takes another step, he comes into the light shining from the school. He had fluffy blonde hair and flashing brown eyes. He wasn't in a costume, but a blue button up shirt and dressy black pants.
