Maria took a bite of her food, trying to ignore the fact that her mother was shooting her warning looks every single time she spoke. Miguel's phone rang.

"Sorry, mom I -"

Carmen cuts Miguel off with a gentle look that she hasn't given to her other child in a long time. "It's okay, mijo, answer it."

Miguel shot his mother a grateful smile and ran around the corner. Carmen got a look from her mother. "He has a girlfriend." She said with a small smirk.

Rosa rolled her eyes.

Maria couldn't help herself, she spoke up. "Ask him about his sex life recently?" She inquired sarcastically, not looking up from her food.

"Maria!" Carmen scolds, laughing nervously as Johnny chokes on his water. "This is not the time, nor the place, mija."

Maria shrugs, stabbing at her dinner. "Good point. Wouldn't want to talk about sex in my kitchen. At dinner. With my sensei next to me."

"I could, uh, take this back over to -" Johnny starts but is cut off.

"No, it's fine, Johnny." Carmen assures. "She'll control herself."

Maria sets down her fork and turns to her sensei with dead serious eyes. "Oh yes, I'll be sure to control my sexual urges towards my boyfriend. But, so you know, it's okay for Miguel not to."

"Maria Esperanza!" Carmen pushes her chair out from the table angrily. "¡Ve a tu cuarto! ¡Ahora!" (Go to your room! Now!)

"¡¿Seguro que quieres enviarme a donde no puedas verme?!"  (Are you sure you want to send me where you can't see me?!) Maria counters furiously, getting to her feet as well.

"¡Agora!" (Now!)

"UGH!" Maria rolls her eyes, banging on the table before storming out of the kitchen and into her bedroom.

After Carmen sat back down, she placed her face in her hands, grumbling. "I'm a terrible mother."

"No you're not," Johnny assured.

"She's a flame, that one." Rosa says. "Always angry, like her father."

"¡Mamà!"

Something in Maria snapped. She wanted to do everything in her power to upset her mother. Everything and anything. She wanted to crash a car, get a tattoo, sleep with Hawk, get another piercing, cut off all her hair, everything and anything.

Maria knew she couldn't stay. She couldn't be home right now, not with everything that was happening. With tears in her eyes, she pulled out her phone.

"Can I sleep over?" Maria bit her lip to keep the tears at bay.

"M-Maria, it's a school night," Aisha replied, stuttering at her friends insanity.

"I know, I know, I just . . ." Maria couldn't help but sniffle, and she hated herself for it. "I can't be home right now."

Aisha was silent for a moment. "Okay, yeah. I'll pick you up in ten."

"Pick me up at the dojo, okay?" Maria wasn't staying here to wait.

"Sure,"

★★★

Maria waited at the dojo for at least ten minutes, and she started to become worried. Why wasn't Aisha here yet? Then her phone vibrated in her back pocket, and worry washed over her.

Sorry my dad caught me sneaking out
gn

Maria slid her back down the glass of her dojo doors. She couldn't go home. There was no way she would go home tonight, tomorrow she would, though. She had to. Maria couldn't just run away. She was 16 for crying out loud.
